It's interesting how DeSmith has above mediocre numbers on a poor defensively structured team. He could turn out to be a half decent 1A/B

The isles aren’t going to help the Pens leapfrog them in the playoff race, and they aren’t going to retain in order to do so. Makes zero sense for NY imo.

I think swapping Ty Smith and Petry is a very smart idea. I'd do the exact same thing. Petry can dominate as a 3rd pair guy and it's way better than paying to get rid of him. Goalie tandem fine too assuming Jarry would take a deal like that. Feel like the bottom 6 is still a little weak here though. I think that 4th line would be kind of rough and I feel like if Nylander didn't work out in top 6 it would hurt our depth a lot.

There really isn't much here to move the needle. Would rather have Compher or Bertuzzi over Bunting, but not bad. Just not exciting. Sometimes that's not a bad thing, though. Certainly more reasonable than the recent trend of trading Guentzel and Pettersson while still buying.

That's what I had thought until this season, but his performance declined as his usage increased with Jarry's injuries. Very good backup that I don't think we'd need to replace if we had a good #1, but not much more.

IMO, he's still more than serviceable on the 2nd pairing. Paying to get rid of him is dumb because he's still good enough of a player that his value isn't negative. I don't know why that's apparently a hot take. Smith, I'd prefer to have on his natural side if possible, but I don't know if we'd be able to do that within reason unless we trade one of him or Joseph for an established top 4 defenseman. If we have to play him on the off side, sure.

I think Petry would be fine 2nd pair but great 3rd pair. If possible get him where he'd be great, but not the end of the world if we can upgrade the defense in other areas.

Petry showed he was still one of the Pens' better defensemen this season. It took him time to acclimate to his new team and was slowed by injuries in January, but he was good more often than not. I know it stuck out that he made The Big Mistake more than we'd like, but he was still very much a net positive.

I think what would be best for him is if we were to give him a consistent partner who's a legit top 4 defenseman, which I don't really think he had this season. If we bring in a new top 4 LHD via trade/free agency it could be them or Pettersson, or if we think Smith/POJ could be that guy it could be one of them. I'm not picky. Reduce Petry's ice time a little and give his and Letang's partners a little more so his age isn't as apparent at times. IMO that's the best way to maximize his value.

Isles decline, Pagaeu is worth more to us. Very important centering our 3rd line, and penalty killing.

The big thing is that he makes 6 mil. That is an absurd price for his production this past season. If his cap hit was like 4 mil I don't think were having this conversation. That being said, his contract is not worth buying out or attaching picks to trade. If we can trade him for positive value I would, but otherwise just get him a better partner. Someone faster and who can cover some of his mistakes. I don't think POJ or Smith are the guy at the moment. IMO Smith should be a complete lock for 3rd pair and get consistent ice time. POJ I might listen to trade offers. Get a mobile, puck moving D to play with Petry, and get someone with size to play with Smith like a Gudas would be perfect.

I wouldn't say an absurd one, even if it is high. 31 points in 61 games, reasonable defense when we're not playing against faster teams. I plugged Petry into evolving-hockey's skater tables alongside Matheson and some of the more sought after UFA defensemen (Orlov, Severson, Graves, Gavrikov, Soucy) and he compared fairly well in a lot of them. One of the more offensively gifted of the group, but average at best defensively. Soucy's the only one of the group who probably won't get around $5M or above, although UFAs do tend to make more on the open market.
His price is only high by $1M or so, if you ask me.

Would like to buyout Granlund, but I think this is a good team overall for being fairly realistic and not doing any crazy moves. Definitely swap Petry and Smith though
