Montreal trade down

Created by: LaCurveASlaf
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 30, 2023
Published: May 30, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IMO Ovi is the guy that can get Michkov to come to the NHL before 2026. Washington can get him at 5OA and have a long term remplacement for Ovi and a prospect that will grow alongside one of his idol.

MTL benefits from this trade as they get some assets for trading down and the Mantha cap dump.

Why is MTL getting the worst pick, the higher cap hit and barely getting rewarded for it?

If Michkov is on the board and Washington wants him that badly it likely costs them their 2024 pick to start and goes from there

Interesting idea but WSH is giving up way too much to move up. They aren't going to pay to swap Mantha for Edmundson as they don't really need Ed, they are set on the left side. 8th to 5th OV won't require too much.

Difference between 5th and 8th isn't that much, and they wont be desperate to move up for Michkov since he probably drops lower anyways.

Habs decline.

Moving from 5 to 8 is worth more than lappierre and edmundson at 50 percent is worth more than mantha at full price.

Are you kidding? This deal sucks for Mtl. Mantha is barely an NHL player anymore and his contract sucks. Eddy is at least worth his contract.
Hendrix is a bust.
This trade is brutal for the HABS. Don't trade down. If Washington wants to move up they'll have to get serious.

I do however, agree, that Mitchkov could likely come over earlier to play with Ovy before he retires

IMO he's got outside chances to be an NHL player. I saw him play in the Ahl. he dissapears. He doesnt influence the game.
If he works hard he may be a 3c, but yup. For a 1st rounder he's a bust

How is Hendrix a bust? He's still just 21. No clue how good he is but he's supposedly one of their top prospects still.

I'm not saying this is worthwhile for MTL necessarily, but from WSH's perspective they dont need Edmundson and they also don't need to dump Mantha either, so the only benefit they are really getting is trading up. If the 8th+40th OV get it done then so be it but the way I see it is that they are basically trading Hendrix for a 3rd. The 8th and 40th are valued slightly more than the 5th so that is likely not enough unless they expect their guy (maybe Reinbacher to still be there).

If it happens I think its 8OA, 40OA, and another third or second for 5OA

5 to 8 is actually a dropoff, theres a clear top 5 in this draft, after that its anyone's game, could be Leonard at 6 as it can be Reinbacher or Benson.
the top 5 of this draft is stacked, after that its a bit of a dropoff.

It absolutely is that much when Michkov is already being called the second best player in the draft and only goes 4th or 5the because of the three years. As the other guy said before, there's a clear drop off and to move into that top tier will cost quite a lot this year

Yes, but that's up to MTL if they want to pass on Michkov. What I meant is generally speaking 8th+40th is slightly more valuable than the 5th, probably nkt enough for MTL to take the trade down, but you can't expect them to give up one of their top prospects plus the difference of the 40th and MTL's 2024 3rd.

If MTL doesn't want Michkov and rather have any of those guys then it will be an auction of who offers the most and it would likely be the teams 2nd plus another pick in the draft or B/C-prospect that MTL likes.

Not saying he's nearly as good or even the same league as Michkov but considering WSH let Ivan Miroshnichenko fall from proj. 6 OV or whatever to them at 20th (edit: was thinking of someone else who dropped at the draft-his stock fell well before), do you really think they will pay two arms and two legs to move uo 3 spots to get Michkov when there's a good chance that he could fall to them?

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they won't trade up for him, but I don't see why a team that is retooling to get younger is going to risk potentially giving up a top 10 pick in next years draft.

everyone always makes these trade ups/downs for 5oa way too complicated. Either MTL likes Michkov and they stay put, or they don't and move it for a package like the one above. Absolutely zero need to add in the Mantha/Edmundson stuff or Lapierre
