Extreme overpayment for Travis Hamonic. Leafs would not name a player a captain only for 1 year. It will most likely go to Auston Matthews, whenever he is ready. I'd much rather Leafs spend a couple extra million on signing Patrick Marleau to a short term deal. He's a couple years younger than Doan and posses more speed and scoring upside than Doan.

I think you're forgetting that Taylor Hall was traded for Larsson last year. Good defensemen are expensive. And i'd much rather make smaller moves and get a really good defenseman than make a bunch of crazy trades and mess up half of the lineup. I'm sure Marleau is better than Doan but that move is more about motivating the best player on the team and making for a good story that the media can sell.

That's still a top 6 LW, a mid 6 prospect and a 1st round pick... That's over payment. That's nearly the price for Duchene, but a F instead of a D, and it hasn't been met because it's too much. Duchene > Hamonic.

Fantastic comparison. If the Leafs and Isles deals, it'd be a similar hockey-style 1-for-1 trade. I could see a situation where JVR perhaps was traded for Hamonic, but no prospects involved or draft picks. The down year Hamonic had in comparison to JVR's 1 year left seems to balance each other out. So, if the Isles want a Hall-Larsson type deal, by all means smile

The Leafs who sell out don't need a media story about Shane Doan. What, you want to take Nylander off Matthews line? We're talking about Shane Doan, who did not waive his NMC/NTC once to go to the a contending team and enjoy a nice playoff run. Leafs don't need Doan, heck the Coyotes don't need him. And a big overpayment for Hamonic.
