Utilizing Cap Space

Created by: Patches

Description
Trying to keep trades realistic, let me know what you think.

Overpaying some free agents, but we need to hit the cap floor. And if we retain half at the trade deadline on players like Killorn or O’Reilly, we could still get some good returns.

I imagine some prospects (hopefully Korchinski) are able to work their way into the active roster this year. So a lot of the bottom 6 forwards + bottom 4 D will be getting shaken up throughout the year.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts, or if there’s something I’ve missed!

Huge overpays for O'Reilly and Killorn. And with their Stanley Cup pedigrees, they would likely want to sign with contenders.

Nothing against you Patches, but personally I'm tired of seeing that Murray to Chicago trade for an exchange of picks. It's about right in value going back and forth but without Dubas GMing at Toronto, I can see them seeking other ways to rid themselves of Murray.

Since Dubas looks like he's headed to PIT and with his trading history with Davidson, that PIT trade may go down.

Killorn and O'Reilly are not coming to Chicago, they are going to want to go to a team that has a chance to win a cup.
Hawks need to keep their cap space, continue to build through the draft. We got Bedard, now build from there. Suck for another year to get another top pick. Build the prospects up together then sign a big free agent or two once they are ready.
don't over pay now

yeah, the trades look fair, but it's up to the TOR and PIT fans to guess whether their GMs would use their resources in this way.

The OTT 2nd is too much in the Murray trade, and adding the CHI 3rd in the PIT trade is probably too much as well, but is reasonably acceptable. I would love Killorn to come to CHI, but @hawksfan1988 is probably right. Although, I could see a situation where he takes the larger pay day to come to CHI. He has already won two cups, and there aren't many contenders that could afford to pay him what CHI could. Which is what he is actually worth, and he has been underpaid most of his NHL career.

Move the Chicago '23 3rd to the Toronto trade and keep the Ottawa 2nd and those two trades make sense for the Hawks.

Killorn has stated he wants to be a Bolt for life. At best, he signs a 1 year, high $ deal in Chicago and returns to Tampa next season on a new deal.

Can't see O'Reilly signing here at all, or Kyle giving AA or any other UFA in this class 3 years. Next summer will be the time to chase a longer term UFA. Guys like Bunting and Tatar will probably be willing to sign for a year or two at overnarket $$ to fill the top 6.

Players almost always say they want to "Be a (insert team) for life". Unless he is willing to take a league minimum contract, that doesn't really mean anything.

The Penguins can (and IMO should) just buyout Granlund and keep the 14OA.
