Just FAs

Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2023
Published: May 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A pretty weak FA class, as well as the pending extensions for core players means not a lot of moves. I don't think a blockbuster trade is on the table, the team was very close this year with some injuries, I don't think subtracting multiple pieces to add a single better piece is the MO of our front office.

I imagine that Paul Statsny retires, I thought he had a good year with us but he sounded like he was done in his exit interview.
I was a big fan of Ghost during the regular season but his defense in the playoffs was not very good.

I know top end scoring is a concern but hopefully continued growth from Necas/Jarvis/Svech (albeit offset a bit by Burns/Skjei coming back down to earth) will help in that regard, though I'm not opposed to ideas on other FAs. I've heard Tarasenko mentioned but I think he'll want more/longer than Waddell is willing to commit. There is some cap space to work with but I don't know the options super well.

Always the possibility of getting another Patches for free type deal, just never know what will get thrown at you.

Curious what other Canes fans think of this team (basically run it back with ROR as 2C and Graves on D).

Not enough money for Graves, but you don't address the scoring. This sounds like Waddell knows he needs to grab a scorer

Who would you recommend that is a UFA? I couldn't find many scorers available and as I said in the description I don't think a trade is going to happen but if it were, maybe DeBrincat? I've seen some trades here that included Turbo going over, and he had a bad year, but was also battling injury/ dealing with the death of his grandfather. He has such good chemistry with Aho that it feels like a small upgrade at best, but I do see the potential there.

What is the proposed contract on Graves going to be?

I expect 4.5 x 5 for Graves, but if you're going to do that, he's the Skjei replacement so you don't have to worry about Skjei next summer.

As for the scorer, I think the best fit is Tarasenko. No asset cost, he's a better alternative than Kane. Cat had such a down year that isn't worth worth going that way. Marner is another pass 1st guy. There's Keller who I'd really like, but I expect that Arzona fights to keep him like they did Chychrun. I don't like Konecny because of that unsustainable shooting percentage. There is Connor if you offer enough, but I don't think that's a great idea either if the delusional jets Fans are going to want a Necas who has 9 fewer points than KC...

TL:dr Keller is the only really viable option I see on the trade market. Free agency really is just Tarasenko

Would a similar team then be Tarasenko at 7x5, Graves at 4.5x5, and then slot Drury into the line up? I did like what we saw from him during the playoffs, played a very good defensive game even if he didn't score.

That's high for Tarasenko. I'm expecting 5.5 x 3 because of his injury history. He's only 31 so you're not committing long term and his down year brings the number down. You can slot Drury in anyway, I think he probably fills in for Stastny at 4C. Graves then becomes the long term Skjei replacement and it moves seamlessly forward
