I was literally thinking to myself this morning "I would love it if the Oilers signed Grubbe tomorrow". I say this guy play live lots as the Rebels are my fav WHL team and he seems to have decent depth player potential

L for the Rangers.
Had hopes that down the road, when they moved expensive pieces, they may have room.
But in reality, would likely never use him.

As a recent 3rd round pick, Jayden Grubbe has shown tremendous growth playing for the Red Deer Rebels.

The Rangers should not have given up on him.

Certainly not for a 5th round pick.

The Edmonton Oilers win the trade.

I love moves like this.

Good scouting aware of local talent and a proactive management ready to act on it to beat the market.

Signed a Montreal fan tired of seing local talent poached by TB.

Interesting trade, I'd have to say EDM wins this though.

Couldn't Edmonton have just waited until tomorrow to sign him without spending the 5th? Or am I mistaken about that?

Yes, however, he might've signed with another team if he reached FA, Edmonton most likely wanted to guarantee the signing

I don't know why they would risk the 5th if they weren't 99% confident that he would sign with them though.

They must have been 100% sure he'd sign then, looks like Edmonton got the deal done already

Sure did. So it begs the question: why not wait until tomorrow and keep their 5th? For this reason I can't call this a win for Edmonton.

No, he would have re-entered the draft if left unsigned

I think he goes back into the draft if he's unsigned

Yes but they could have lost him for nothing as today was the last signing day for Grubbe then he would go back in the draft

The solution for the Rangers would be to sign Grubbe to his ELC before today like they were supposed to.

And if the Rangers need to make room for him in the minors, then they could move somebody out that's lower on their depth chart before next season starts.

Or they could have asked the Oilers for a 3rd round pick instead.

wouldn't want that for the oilers

If you are drafting somebody, you need to make sure that they want to play for you.

That's why the scouting staffs of all 32 teams conduct interviews of every prospect before the draft.

In this case, the Rangers are to blame for drafting someone that never wanted to play for them.

The Oilers win the trade.

Oh, okay, that makes sense. I was thinking he would've been a free agent.
