Description
The Werenski trade follows the outline of the Tkachuk trade, leafs give up playmaking point getter, solid d man entering final year of his contract, B level prospect and a first rounder. In return the Leafs get the #1 Dman they have lacked for years. Obviously Werenski would need to waive for Toronto but I think its a cool idea at the very least.

Columbus, who is full of overpaid wingers, trades the only NHL-caliber defenseman they have for yet another overpaid winger? Pass.

Disagree, the leafs need a #1 Dman, they get him a a lower AAV then Marner, and move out an expiring Brodie at 5mill

They have one in Rielly but for arguments sake, how does the trade improve the Leafs?

Marner+Brodie's contributions are greater than Werenski's so you're losing that the trade, and paying other assets on top just for the potential to maybe come out on top using the cap space via FA (there's no guarantee you get those guys signed).

yeah the smart thing would be to add another high priced winger to our logjam while shipping out our best defenseman. This is a trade completely looking from TOR perspective without caring what the other side needs. terrible trade

This is by far the best Werenski to TOR trade I've seen value wise, but it's just pointless to suggest trades that don't consider the wants/needs of 1 side.

Werenski is literally the only current NHL caliber D on the CBJ roster that is 100% in the long term plans. Their top 6, even top 9 is already set and quite solid at wing, making it the 1 position they don't have issues at. Trading Werenski would only serve to make one of the worst blue lines even more bad without a plan for 1LD long term.
