Vision for the future

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2023
Published: Jun. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Basically, I'm looking into this one without a trade for Dubois and letting it sit for a year if Chev decides to wait it out and try to keep him.

I'm doing low value trasactions just to get a few extra picks knowing I don't have a base for major moves.

1. Mantha - WASH get rid of Mantha's cap hit so they can sign somone on the UFA market; So they pay a 4th in 2024 but get a 6th in 2023.

2. Buy-outs for Armia and Hoffman; Both cost little on the long run, Hugues gets rid of two spots in order to make way for younger players and get them ready for 24-25 giving them a year of play in the NHL.

3. DVorak - Gives ARZ a good 2nd-3rd centerman with experience since they are missing C's in their lineup. They only pay up 2X 3rd Round picks instead of a 2nd rounder; and they still have plenty of picks for 23 and 24.

4. Created Carlsson hoping Columbus would take the trade for Hutson for their pick (Yeah I know it's a freaking long shot...)

5. William Smith hoping he'll still be available by some chance, else maybe go for Dvorsky? I would send either of them to Laval for development.

6. Since I provided Evans to the trade which included Hutson, I sign Bjugstad for a one year deal to help the fourth line have a seasoned veteran who can win some faceoffs.

7. Gurianov - Send him out to any team that currently needs a winger and can spare a late round pick, you never know what that pick may bring you in the long run.

Additional Details:
FYI - Just picked ANA as an example of a trade for Gurianov vs a late round pick; Don't comment about ANA not wanting this, or declining, I'm just using them as an example, I would trade his rigths for a late to any team really.

Additional Details:
I may be hit by all sides here for those that preach to keep HUtson, but personally I think Habs should trade him for a top 3 pick if they can get it. While he's hot right now, he doesn't have size that Habs need. We already have too many small players and even if he's putting up numbers right now, it doesn't mean he's going to be doing the same in the NHL. Right now he's not competing against hard hitters and guy that can shove him to the side. Our defense is already looking good, with some good sized players, why not moving him while he's hot for a top 3?

Is that Carlsson for Hutson & Evans?! There's no way the Jackets do that! They need a top line Center. The list starts and ends with Suzuki++

Not even close to getting 3OA. Hutson could get the LA pick but definitely not the jackets pick

Ok, I'd go for the LA pick instead and pick another prospect.

Or, what else could get this done? Add Beck or Kidney to the deal? CAL first in 2025? Or a 2nd in 2023?

In order to get them actual immediate help at center, I would think they'll be targetting someone on the UFA market that is already a proven NHLer. Krejci? Compher? Rodrigues? Haula?

Maybe trade with VGK for Roy? VGK are basically in the can in terms of cap space, they'll need t move someone.. Eichel and Karlsson can't be moved. Roy could be an option.

How about Toronto, if Matthews confirms that he sees his future elswhere in a US market, they could potentially do a three way trade to get assets like Hutson and Evans (who as a low cap hit for a center), add on to the trade and get the big name Center they need like Matthews.

Maybe even go to VAN and do the same deal but for Petterson (If he agree to lift the NMC clause to play with Gaudreau)..

THere are possibilities out there ..

They still have Jenner, Roslovic, Kuraly, and Sillinger on the books. Sillinger can be dropped back for further development and bring in a big name for Gaudreau and Laine. THey are currently sitting at 18 players with a bit under 17M$ to spare. So if they can either go UFA or trade for a player from a team desperate to move cap or get something in return for a soon to be lost cause, could be worth it to trade for Hutson, Evans, Beck/Kidney and a 1st in 2025 or 2nd in 2023?

While they may need Carlsson, would they need that center to perform now or a few years down the road when Gaudreau and Laine may lose some of their shine??

Jackets aren’t trading 3OA unless it’s for a cost controlled 1C like Petey. Don’t think the Habs have the pieces to pull it off. Maybe Suzuki++ but even then jackets need quality over quantity as they already have a loaded prospect pool so roster spots will be hard to come by in a couple years

Point taken. Still, Gaudreau and Laine would need a big name center now rather than later, while Carlsson is a big piece, I wonder if he'll be the "Now" piee or later.. Fantilli.. now that's a choice to go for without hesitation, hence my view on a potential trade with a current NHLer. And of course, Matthews would not comply to that "cost control" LOL!
