Yamamoto Campbell Buyout

Created by: J_w64
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2023
Published: Jun. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Frank Seravalli posted on twitter that the Oilers may look to buyout Yamamoto. Financially it makes sense considering they'd get nearly 2.5m in savings this summer and only a hit of -500,000 next season. Now for Campbell, what a disastrous signing that was. Although he bounced back to some extent in the playoffs, the Oilers have Skinner who proved to be far superior, and have Rodrigue on the come up.

Send Yamamoto to the Caps, they would give you a 6th and save you the buyout.

Fair, I think with his lack of production and cap hit the Oilers may have to add picks for a team to take him, hence being a buyout candidate.

I was thinking that but Joseph has an extra year on his deal so I think it'd work as is.

I would say the caps take him straight up, They are going to look to move Kuzy and Mantha this off season, they might just take him.

I find it hard to believe that nobody would be willing to trade a late pick for Yamamoto. 6th rounder for him has got to be better than paying him to go away.

I was surprised when I saw that Yamamoto was a buy out possibility...maybe I just don't pay enough attention the Oilers but that seems like an odd move, no?

eh, pass. unless Ottawa manages to flip Ceci for a late pick, I'd rather spend 3M on a decent 3rd liner than 3.25 on a decent 3rd pairing defenceman. I think JBD is ready to play full-time 3rd pair minutes though

Joseph is/should be more of a buyout candidate than Yamamoto. No sense buying Yamo out only to inflict the bottom-6 with another cap burden.

I wouldn't say that Yamamoto and Joseph are really comparable. Yamamoto is an undersized "offensive" forward who doesn't do offence. Joseph is a bottom 6 defensive forward who's great on the pk.

Yea as a guy who has followed the oilers they should have moved him a while ago. And now they have Jesse P part 2.

I think that deal is more favourable for the sens considering he can play pk and help support some of the younger LHD the sens have.

And he has one year less on his deal.

I agree. Try and trade any of those buyouts for anything. Even a late pick, even if you have to retain. Better than just buying out. That's what WPG is trying to do with Wheeler. Get something if possible and if that doesn't work out, then buyout.

Yamamoto also kills penalties and, despite his flaws, plays an important role in puck retrievals on Drai's line. Honestly, the role each would occupy would probably pretty similar: speedy puck-chaser with less-than-ideal puck skills that PKs and chips in some offense. Joseph is certainly better-suited to bottom-6 work in the traditional sense but the move leaves us with a cap inefficiency of similar proportions for an extra two years. The point of buying out Yamo should be expediting the removal of the cap inefficiency, not the extending of it.
