I believe a 1st round pick in this upcoming draft and a top prospect that is either on the bubble of coming into the NHL or just in. Kinda like... Krebs and BUF's 1st. Or R. Johnson and BUF's 1st. Something like that.

What do you think that would look like from Detroit? If I’m Yzerman, I’d rather keep the prospects we have and (assuming the current picks we have don’t chance) offer something like 9OA, next year’s 1st and either a McIssac(close to NHL ready) or a 2nd.
Thoughts?

I’ll never understand the Dubas hate. Dude was aggressive and did everything he could in Toronto. Sure, some of his moves didn’t work out, but he made big moves(JT, Murray, ROR, Samsonov, Giordano). Again, yeah some haven’t worked out but at the time, those guys were good.

Dumbas came in and traded the Leafs first to dump 1 year of Marleau. Nobody had used a first round pick to dump a 1 year contract prior to this. He was afraid of a Marner offer-sheet but you can go over the cap by 10% in the off-season. He then proceeded to sign Marner to more money than Eichel got and a term that took him straight to UFA 2 years sooner.

Dumbas also signed Matthews to another new precedent — a five year deal that walked him straight to UFA. McDavid, MacKinnon etc. etc. didn’t get these type of deals.

Dumbas traded a 1st and multiple picks — pretty much an entire draft — for Nick Foligno and spare parts at the TDL. None of the spare parts suited up for Toronto in the playoffs. Foligno player 4 games in the playoffs and had 1 assist — he played 4th line center in game 7. An entire draft for a 4th line center?

Dumbas refused a sign and trade with Hyman that would have had no impact on the Leafs bottom line but would have given him a 4th and 6th round pick. He was upset because he had given up high picks in similar deals.

Dumbas traded Ritchie and a second to get rid of the contract. Dumbas traded down from the first round to get out of the Mrazek deal. Trading first round picks to fix your mistakes is bad management.

Dumbas traded Sandin at the TDL for a first when the Leafs could have used Sandin in the playoffs. If he still wanted to trade him, he could have made that deal at the deadline.

The biggest problem with Dumbas is that he inherited Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Reilly. Tavares was dropped on his lap and he had no influence on JT coming home. In his 5 years as GM he added exactly ZERO players to this core, but he did lose/trade Kadri, Hyman, Anderson and others.

He was a rookie GM learning on the job. Making huge mistakes with a multi-billion dollar franchise. Responsible for peoples jobs and livelihoods. Have a look at all his trades, all the assets that he sent out and what is left on the Leaf roster from those deals. Effectively he has only McCabe, Timmins and Lafferty left in return for a pile of picks and assets.

This is the sum total of Dumbas’ trades — not very impressive — squandering years of picks for UFA’s. He’s traded top picks from the 2023, 24, 25 drafts that will haunt the Leafs for years.

Out (Players still in the NHL)

From DET? Thinking something like the #9 pick in this upcoming draft or Marco Kasper. Then add William Wallinder. The Jets throw in one of their D not named Morrissey or Samberg.

I see. My only rebuttal would be when you have more than half of your cap locked up into 5 players, you’re going to have to pay to try to get some flexibility to keep trying to improve the roster. Dubas knew he wouldn’t be able to afford those guys so he had to dump them, or not be able to afford the core 5 guys. I’m not saying he’s a great GM, but at least he made moves to try to get over the hump.

Who’s fault was that? Who signed Matthews, Marner and Nylander to cap averages higher than their comparables? He was GM for 5 years and traded 6 first round picks. He’s lucky his scouts drafted Knies and Robertson in the 2nd round. There’s a video of Dumbas wanting to trade the Knies pick but his scouts had to tell him to draft the kid. After the scouts plead with him to draft Knies, Dumbas says “Is he really that good?” The scouts say “Yes.”

Bottom line if you trade away that many 1sts you should have added to the core.

Yes. I think DET will be much better this year so the next year's 1st isn't as interesting to me. #9 and Wallinder or 9 and 17 over anything next year, etc.

Those guys were always going to get those cap hits. That was inevitable. I agree his trade pick management was lacking, but the alternative was trading JT, Marner, or Matthew’s to try to balance the roster and not be so top heavy.

Not true. Nylander got more than Pasternak or Ehlers. Marner got more than Eichel…. They were all overpaid by about a million. Marner probably 2. That would have given the Leafs 3-4 million more cap space which would have been huge.

Dumbas made many rookie mistakes.

So a rookie GM made rookie mistakes…
Also, maybe unpopular opinion, but Marner is better than Eichel and Nylander is better than Ehlers

If the jets opt for a rebuild, they take that. Reclamation project in Zadina, 9 and 11 oa, and more picks in a deep draft.

Nylander wasn’t better than Pasternak and isn’t.

Marner wasn’t better than Eichel pre-neck surgery. Especially at the time of his contract.

Dubas did get better but still he has handcuffed the Leafs for years with bad contracts and trading 6 1st round picks in his 5 year tenure. The Leafs barely have any picks the next 3 years. The next GM will pay the price for this.

Never said he was better than Pasta. I’m not saying he made all the best moves, all I’m saying is at least he tried. Detroit is still recovering from Holland’s extending Abdelkader, Ericcson, Nielsen, Cleary and the like. Or trading 1sts for Kyle Quincey then extending him.

My point is Dubas build a team that could have won a cup and should have had more success. At some point it has to come down to the players and coaches.
