Honestly, do you actually think the Canes would consider trading Aho for Marner 1-1, much less add Pesce and a 1st?

I really would like to know where this sort of delusional thought process comes from. Please enlighten me.

just basing it off the tkachuk trade last year where the flames gave up a worse player than marner, for a 100 point scorer(more than aho) + weegar(better than pesce), maybe take out the first but it's a very comparable trade.

Tkachuk was an rfa, marner is walking in 2 years, it’s not even remotely the same

tkachuk demanded a trade and informed the flames he wasn't resigning. the flames had less leverage than the leafs do in this case

Also the two players sent to CGY were older than Aho and one could assume negotiations for extensions for them went south

trade would only happen on the condition they both extend, much like the hubey-weegar deal

They’re also a 1C and arguably top pair D, integral parts of CAR’s team.

2 yrs of Marner, as a winger, holds no where close to that sort of value.

No it’s really not.

Florida already had Barkov and Huberdeau was coming up on 30. Aho is 26 still in his prime, plays a much more important position than Marner AND he’s a better goal scorer.

So, CAR scoffs at the ask of Aho 1-1 for Marner, much less adds.

I’m not even going to get into the ridiculous ask of Pesce + a 1st on top of Aho.

Marner ain’t no Tkachuk. Another point which blows your misguided valuation out of the water was that Tkachuk came with a reasonably priced 8yr extension. Marner is on a bloated $11M deal for just 2 more years.

Why should the Canes take a step back, with an overpaid winger, by trading 2 key pieces to their team?

to get something for them before they walk? the player also becomes their best player

Why would they walk? They’re certainly not going to have more playoff success in TOR vs CAR.

Even if they did walk, the Canes would be able to recoup better assets for them in separate trades vs packaging them for a soft winger. They’d have to replace a 1C and top 4 D and by taking on Marner’s $11M, well that ain’t really possible is it?

That's a completely ridiculous trade. Such an overpay for Carolina. Marner has more points than Aho and an additional year. Aho is a center and better in his own end.

I‘m against Trading Marner at all, but if return doesn’t include Aho + or Slavin + then forget it. Pesce is overrated and pending ufa so little interest. Marner easily becomes best player on Canes even with Aho; enough hot air about value of centre position. If that’s the case try trading aho to Tampa for kucherov or minny for Kaprizov, no chance. Marner impacts the game at an elite level - and is better than Aho - at both ends.

Why does CAR need to change the makeup of their team? The need goal scoring, they’ll get Svechnikov back and they’ll have a ton of cap space and futures to address that. They, as a team, are much more complete than the Leafs.

Aho very likely is re-signed this summer, as discussions evidently have already started. Pesce, again likely re-signed this summer.

Even if both players do end up not re-signing, the Canes could bring in much more value by trading them separately and while still retaining the cap space to potentially replace them, something they would not have by taking on Marner’s $11M.

First Marner has a lot more points; second value of center position is overrated - production is what matters. And third I don’t think Aho is better defensively than Marner, he leads league (or top 5 every year) in takeaways, plays on PK1 (Leafs > Canes + not even sure Aho kills penalties?), and is a Selke nominee. Please

correction - Canes had better PK % than Leafs, apologies. I was mistakenly looking at combined value (PK + PP) which leafs won b/c our PP was >>
