Pens fans here want to trade us the pick, and they think they'll get the 31/32 pick amd 37th plus other picks but habs will never go for it ...

MTL
  1. Mantha, Anthony
  2. 2023 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Trading Mantha without retention or at leats 4 to 5 million going back to Washington will cost Washington... as a player he has value but as a contract he doesn't and Washington need cap space badly... Monahan costed a 1st to dump so I think this is a fair offer.

The 8th pick for clean 5.7M off the books and the 15th and 37th picks

Caps pass. They'll see what Mantha can do with a good coach. 8OA is too valuable for them, especially if Michkov is there.

Massive Fact Alert: the Pittsburgh first is 14th overall, not 15th.

I can't see WAS moving back, if anything they'll be swinging for 5OA if Michkov is there.

Value wise, how do you feel about it ?
And if you're the Washington GM which player you're not bringing back to be able to keep manthas 5.7m cap hit

Coincidentally, the difference between 14th and 15th just happens to be the Montreal 2023 fourth.

It's not close. I don't think the Caps see Mantha as a negative value player, and even if he were, no team is going to use an 8th overall pick to dump a one year contract.

The Caps don't need to move anyone to afford Mantha. They can afford to pretty much run it back with the same roster they ended the year with, just slotting in prospects for their handful of UFAs. The most likely player to move in order to change things up is Kuznetsov. If Mantha's traded, I think it's for a similar underperforming winger like Boeser, but my money's on them keeping him and seeing what he can do under Carberry.

I think if Caps move their 8OA they are using it in a package to bring back a great young player (Nylander, Bratt, Keller, etc.) rather than moving a contract. They can move out Kuz to free up space.

Mantha is not good but I cant see a scenario where they move out of the top 10 just to dump him

value wise its fine but i just don't see any scenario in which they trade back at all that doesn't net them a significant roster player. it's the highest pick they've had since 2007 in the deepest draft in a decade and for a team that desperately needs true high-end prospects. Tarik el-Bashear in the Athletic today basically confirmed that teams have been calling them to move up but they're not really biting at all. a clean 5.7 off the books is nice, but I don't think the caps are that desperate to move off from Mantha before the draft or really at all. There's no good UFA to use that space on so any upgrade will probably be via trade anyways where Mantha can be used as salary filler. They also have a lot more wiggle room than Calgary did and I would argue that CGY way overpaid to dump Monahan and other similar contracts have been moved for less recently.
