My Take on Next Year

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2023
Published: Jun. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmonton clearly has a lot of scoring. Their top 6 is unreal. I started Holloway in there to start but if he doesn't pan out they have options, such as Barabanov.

My focus was to get more physical and defensive minded bottom 6 forwards and dmen. Mayfield is an upgrade over Ceci. Benning is an upgrade over Desharnais.

To make any meaningful change cap has to be moved out. Campbell can definitely have a bounce back year, but it's hard to upgrade the rest of his team with him here. I think this trade with Arizona would be very interesting. Boyd would be a great bottom 6 add, Vejmelka is a good goalie, signed for a few more years, on a good cap. Him and Skinner would make a good 1a + 1b. Arizona get a good prospect, 1st, and a 3rd.

Thoughts overall?

I think these are the type of moves Edmonton should make this offseason. I am not a fan of them going after Karlsson.

Why would San Jose remotely consider that?

Desharnais is 27 and has only played 36 NHL games, Foegele holds very little value to the Sharks as he will just walk next year. Barabonov is a much better trade chip than Foegele and Benning is solid on a great contract. A cap dump (yes Foegele is a dump to a rebuilding team like the Sharks), an AHLer and a 2nd isn't going to get you a cheap top six winger and top4 defensemen.

Why do the sharks do that deal? Barabanov is worth more than a 2nd and Benning after last season and with such a low cap hit might be worth a 2nd as well. Both players are thrown in for cap savings and don’t provide any value to the sharks.

Alrighty! Let’s dig into this. Pretty decent overall in my opinion.

So, I like the addition of Mayfield. Very good physical defender, however, if we can, I would like to get him on a contract anywhere from 3.5-4M. I personally would keep Yamamoto, but we may trade him, and as long as we get an upgrade, then I’m happy! I like the thought process of Barabanov, if we move Yamamoto, as he is the guy I wanted the oilers to grab at the deadline. Good top 9 forward. I like the idea of getting rid of Campbell, and I personally would pay the price for Arizona to take him, just don’t see Holland doing it. I would be down to give up as much as needed to dump him, and get a cheaper guy in. We shouldn’t wait on a maybe! Overall, team looks good, depth is decent! I believe Lavoie is ready, but that is a minor detail in this post.

You really think Barb is worth more than a 2nd? I dunno man. I think a 2nd with retention is right now.
Benning is a 3rd at best imo.

My issue with that trade is we don't want the players coming our way.

47 points steady improvement each of the last 3 years and only 2.5 mil cap hit with 2/3 of the nhl close to the cap ceiling and we saw players with way more cap less points and older bring in more at the deadline I have to say yes. If the cap jumped 4-5 mil his value would have dropped a bit.

It's insane how far off you are. Barabonov was on a 58 pt pace this last season on a 2.5 cap hit. Benning had fantastic defensive stats and his best pt productive year on a trash team, on a 1.25 cap hit for three more years. They're the two best contracts on the team, some of the best value contracts in the league.

Easily a 2nd + a decent prospect and could even fetch a 1st + for a team that's cap strapped.

Barabanov is a top 9 forward. Not a top 6 forward. Benning is 5-7 dman not a top 4 dman. Either way, both are on good contracts, hence why they are desireable.

Barabanov should fetch a 2nd, Benning about a 3rd. Foegele and Deharnais are neutral value.

So I do agree I am a bit short in terms of value. Add a 3rd or a mid prospect that San Jose likes and I think this is fair.

Foegele has the potential to be resold at the deadline as well, if he gets a bigger role in San Jose and performs. But that would be an added bonus.

San Jose should be collecting as many picks and prospects as they can over the next few years.

I don't deny the improvements, but I figured a 2nd with retention was fair for a middle six winger.
The cap hit versus cap situation for the league isn't something I thought about earlier. I'd be happy with a 1st haha.

You are so far off here, this is such an easy decline for SJ. Really senseless for Grier to even consider any of this.

Yea we need to collect picks and retool the prospect pool but not at the total detriment of the team. You say top 9 but a guy on a 50+ point pace over 82 games is a top 6 on most teams. He ended the year ranked 119th in the entire league in scoring, remove the 17 D ahead of him and that leaves 102 forwards in the league who scored more divide that by 32 and you get 3.18 meaning on a below average team he’s your 3rd highest scoring forward, on an average team 4th and on a very good team 5/6 thats top 6 in my books brother. And top 6 making 2.5 mil or 1.25 here for the season is worth a 1st. Otherwise there isn’t much reason to move him! Rather resign him since he is only 28 and will still be solid in 3-4 years when sharks are a playoff team again.
