Realistic Potential Leafs Lineup

Created by: YouHaveToBeLeaf
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2023
Published: Jun. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No Major Moves. Murray's contract needs to be moved. Depth from within the organization needs to be utilized eventually, why not this year? No committing to long-term deals due to the cap-situation, but need SOME commitment to the team (3-year deals max). By then, the Tavares deal is up (in 2 years). Bunting, Kampf, O'Reilly, Acciari, Schenn, Samsonov back (Holmberg too). And we trust the young talent to contribute. Calm, cool, collected moves. Left with about $300k in cap space (and that is with having 14 players on the roster) to help alleviate some of the pressure if injuries occur, as well as help at the trade-deadline (especially if someone goes on LTIR).

I would be reluctant to give up on Kurachev as I think he has some room to grow into a really good 3rd liner in the 20G/40P range. Murray, the BOS 1st, and the '24 Chicago 5th for Kurachev would get me closer to maybe yes (I really want more season of Kurachev to see what he might be though).

Seriously, Bunting is a UFA, he gets minimum 3.5M offer elsewhere.

O'Reilly is likely signing a 4-5 year deal, given his age I don't think he signs the two year deal unless the AAV is ridiculously high.

No way it costs a 1st to move Murray; bunting gets way more than that - probably elsewhere. Not sure we need ROR (too slow and we have Tavare) but agree with your general premise. Nothing too radical this off season, a few key returnees (Sammy of course, Kampf, Acciari and maybe Schenn) augmented by bigger ticket FAs (I’d target Compher + Soucy?)

It's not costing you a 1st to move Murray in this proposal. Hawks decline anyways because Kurashev has a future with the team. He's 23 years old with almost 200 NHL games played already and has wheels. There aren't many skaters faster than him in the league.

Where is it costing a 1st to move Murray? This AGM has Kurachev going back. Most AGM's involving Murray are the Boston first for a 2nd (from the ludicrous Hawks 2nd to the NYR 2nd and the 2 in between). Kurachev has put up back to back 20 point seasons and has a pretty well round game at 23. My guess is the creater of this AGM values Kurachev more than a mid to late 2nd and that is the offset to the Boston 1st. Honestly Kurachev for a win before guys start hitting UFA (or age to much more with Tavares) team makes more sense than a 2nd that you'll be waiting 2 or 3 years to arrive with a chance they never arrive or are not even as good as Kurachev.

Thank you, had no idea who Kurashev was (don’t follow the hawks closely), thought he was just a make weight.

Said it earlier....I would be real reluctant to move Kurashev. It probably boils down to where we are at on an extension. I would absolutely love locking him in for 4 or 5 years to gamble a little that he outperforms the last couplle of years. 2-2.5 for 4-5 years could be a shrewed move for the Hawks. Overpay a bit in the first year or two compared to beating him up as an RFA year by year when cap space is not a concern, with the hope/expectation that he is a 40 point middle 6 on a bargain contract for the last couple years where cap starts to matter if Bedard and all the other high picks work as hoped.

Kampf plays a huge role in shutting down opposition's top guys, as well as face-off duties in the d-zone, and penalty killing. I'd keep him over Bunting any day.

Drop one of those dudes to the minors and bump it up to 2.5million. Does not really matter does it? There's cap room. Bunting is not a necessity to be honest.

So first, Bunting is overrated, and now that he needs a new contract, he's worth all this money? Funny how that works.

Wish we could keep ROR, he fits so well with us. I would also love to have a guy like Soucy. Thanks for the input!

I can see that. If they can get him locked up for longer term I would definitely gamble a bit on his AAV.

I have the same opinion.... but it doesn't mean Bunting makes less in the open market.

Before playoffs he was rumored to be getting 5 x $4-5M. No way he gets less than $3.5. Max kampf gets is $2.5 per.

Again, the point here is kind of to show that even with Kampf making that much, we still have enough cap space. Keeping Bunting is not really necessary either.

When did I say he was overrated.

earlier in the season I figured he was in the 4.5-5 range.... 3.5 is right where he belongs.

Paying him pennies = homerism.
