@NHLfan10506 We would have to move Vanecek to be cap compliant

In DeBrincat experiments, it looked like we would have 10m for Mercer and Schmid. With Marchand, we'd instead have 12m, and he would expire when Hughes and Holtz are due for raises.

Fair enough, but why? I thought you guys were in the goalie market? There was a VV to LA post earlier today

Where does the 12m come from? I'd have to see a 24-25 version of this

Check out my 2024-25 DeBrincat team, 4135853. Only changes would be Haula in for Tatar and Holtz in for Bastian.

This is stolen from a Bruins fan. I'm aware it's bad for them.

If we are bridging Mercer, we should be fine. If we are locking him up, he could get Boldy deal.

They're looking for stable and established goaltending. Vanacek wasn't better than Copley or Korpisalo during the regular season, and both of those guys could be had for cheaper. If Vanecek is the best that's out there, then the Kings will just run with Copley and Petersen next season.

In other words, the same reason you don't want him is the same reason we don't want him.

What? We don't want him because in this hypothetical we don't have the cap space to keep him. Vanecek was better than Copley and SIGNIFICANTLY better than Petersen this season, but he went though a slump in the playoffs.

If one Bruin fan says it’s okay, than it’s good.

Hard to tell. So far, he has looked good, but Goalies are voodoo.

Copley just put up the single best season start in LA Kings franchise history (better than Quick, Vachon, Hrudey, Potvin, etc.), so that's not true at all. Granted, Petersen wasn't good, but he's the horse they have, and they're willing to ride him before bringing on a goaltender that isn't an improvement. Despite the terrible season that Petersen supposedly had, he went 5-3-2 in the NHL. Much of his woes were playing behind a team that was playing terrible defensively at the beginning of the season.

So you'd trade the younger goalie with better priors because goaltending is voodoo?

I'd like to know where you got that Copley stat because all the stats I see show he was pretty average

Meanwhile per MoneyPuck Petersen let in an extra goal per game

I’d trade the younger goalie because the return would be much greater and I’m not sold he would be ahead of Vanecek and Schmid. And his $$ may be higher too. My guess is he will want Demko’s contract. Similar numbers at time of signing.

Here's the writeup by the PWHA from Copley's Masterton nomination:

"When Pheonix Copley was signed on July 13, 2022 by Los Angeles as a free agent, the move was thought to be a minor league goaltending depth add as Pheonix had only played two NHL games since the 2019-‘20 season. But with established starters Jonathan Quick and Cal Petersen underachieving, the 31-year-old Copley was summoned to the big club and made his biggest save, that of the Kings season. He set a franchise record by becoming the fastest goaltender to reach the 20-win mark needing only 29 appearances and earned a one-year contract extension."

Like I said, Petersen wasn't great, but he still managed a .600 points percentage in the games he played in. He was good enough to win hockey games. Blake's end of season press comments said that he intends for Petersen to start next season with the Kings.

The best season?

Quick (2012):
69 games, 1.95 GAA, 0.929 Save %
Started all 20 games in playoffs
1.41 GAA, 0.946 Save % in post-season
Won Cup
Top-5 Hart
Vezina runner-up
Conn Smythe winner

Copley (2023)
37 games, 2.64 GAA, 0.903 Save %
Made 1st round
Team pick for Masterson
