Buffalo pass. Pionk not the type of defenseman we need.

Detroit moved up to get Cossa, not sure how smart it would be to trade him before he can even legally drink…

Stop trading the Wings Helle for Cossa!

Nope, Detroit sure as hell ain't doing that... we'll just ride it out and sign him as a FA next off-season

Should Detroit, who still is rebuilding, trade one of their core rebuild pieces and a 1st for a 30 year old (granted, a top goalie) whose contract is expiring soon?

Hmmm...

At least this PLD trade is priced like it should be - a rental only.

I doubt he will sign there anyway. Buffalo or Pittsburgh would be better trades.

I’m guessing Buffalo or Pittsburgh will be the likely destinations when he makes it clear he won’t resign won’t resign.

Why? A top RHD with 2 years left is a major piece on the market.

Except the fact that he lives here in the off-season and has deep roots in his hometown, but ok...

Plenty of players live near their hometowns. There’s a lake named after Jonathan Toews here. Players that want to win will go where they can win and get paid.

Very generous calling him a top pair d. He’s not getting PP time in Buffalo. You’re overvaluing a clear middle pairing Dman in terms of TOI

If you don't see how close Detroit is to breaking out, you haven't been paying attention... I'd argue that Detroit is closer to a cup than Winnipeg at this stage (who should really go into a full rebuild)

If he doesn’t want to re-sign, so many contenders will be reaching out and bidding. Very intriguing to see where he goes, but for Detroit he doesn’t make sense. I’m sure SY would offer something, but not nearly what WIN would want or something that would win the bid battle against other teams.

He’s been in our top pairing. He doesn’t play 2nd pairing minutes. He’s been over 21 minutes a game for at least 4 seasons now.

You are in the toughest division in the league. Buffalo is ahead of you. Ottawa is ahead of you. The teams above them aren’t going to magically drop off next season. I can see Detroit in the playoffs once Boston and Tampa are completely done for but not before. They have a good 2 seasons yet.

I agree with you. Detroit isn’t a top trade destination. Maybe he will sign there later in his career but he wants to win a cup and it’s not happening with us and Detroit has some years yet before they can really be considered a cup contender.

Yeah without PP time that’s second pairing minutes…. And honestly even with PP that’s close to second pairing. Do you not know there are 60 minutes per game? And first pairing are gonna be closer to 23/24?

As a UFA maybe he signs in Buffalo but not Pittsburgh they are very close to a rebuild and they don’t have capitol to trade for him.

Oh, it's definitely not happening over night, but it's not that far off is my point. I'll give you Buffalo, but I don't agree that Ottawa is ahead of Detroit, especially with the looming ownership uncertainty...

I could see a 2nd+ or late 1st for Pionk but not getting that 1st from Buffalo for him.

Detroit likely doesn't do that and they shouldn't imo, they're quite far away from being relevant.

Unfortunately thats likely all they'll get for Dubois, a later 1st and B-prospect, might get a bit better/more but thats roughly what it'll be.

Could probably recoup a late 2nd for Nino at the TDL, have a lot of cap space so should keep him till then.

Way too generous a contract for Barron, he should be in the $900K range.

No chance of Lundmark getting in the lineup over Hamonic.

We split minutes more than other teams do. He was the only other defenceman over 20 per game aside from Morrissey.

Yeah that’s kinda the point… If he was a top pairing guy, like Morrisey, he’d get Morrissey minutes. He doesn’t. Think you proved my point.

I would want more than a late 1st for him unless a decent prospect is included. None of the free agents are a better option than he is. He also has 2 years left at a decent cap hit. A first round pick would have to be part of the deal or it’s pointless to trade him this year.

Detroit isn’t the best fit but that’s what I’d want for him. Other teams like Buffalo or Pittsburgh who need a goalie and are in win now mode would want Hellebuyck is he is on the market.

I’d rather play Lundmark but we would be rotating him with a veteran whether it’s Hamonic or someone else.

Brett Pesce plays the same kind of minutes for the Canes. He is their 2nd pairing RHD only because of Burns but he’d be top on may teams. If you want a RHD and everything I’ve seen indicates Buffalo wants to upgrade there then you can sign one who won’t be quite as good or you can move for a rental with a year left. Pionk has 2 years left, meaning he has more value than a rental. I’d only take a late 1st for him if a prospect with decent value was included, either a centre or RHD.
