Carter trade is fine.
Petry trade is not for Detroit. We lose on that one.

Detroit accepts the Carter trade.
Detroit laugh at the Petry trade, Detroit 2023 2nd round pick 41st overall > Jeff Petry+2 3rd round picks in a very deep draft.
Winnipeg passes, Hellebuyck by himself is worth more than the 14 OA+30 OA pick A Pittsburgh team heading for the crapper isn't the right team for Hellebuyck.

So the first thing that Dubas should do is waste a second-round draft pick to get rid of one season of Jeff Carter, instead of buying him out for $1 million cash in each of the next two years?!?!?

YOU
GUYS
HAVE
NO
FARM
SYSTEM

You guys can't afford to give up high draft picks.
Look at what this strategic plan gives you on July 1, 2024:
1. The prospect you drafted with the Detroit second-rounder.
2. The prospect you drafted with your 2024 first-rounder.
3. Noah Beck, Conor Garland, Logan Stanley.
Here's what you DON'T have:
1. Anyone drafted with your 2023 first-rounder.
2. Anyone drafted with your 2024 second-rounder.
3. Jake Guentzel, Connor Hellebuyck, Marcus Pettersson.
A one-year horizon is not compatible with the idea of building for the future.
Any first- or second-rounder you have now, you should keep unless you're trading up for a better one or down for more of them.
Any first- or second-rounder you acquire (as for Guentzel) you should keep unless you're trading up for a better one or down for more of them.
The Pens are on a downward arc. You can staunch the bleeding with free agents, but you have to start building a farm system that contains more than Owen Pickering and long shots.

The main problem with Pitt from an outside point of view is the aging of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. They’re all 36-37. But as long as they have those guys, they will continue to try to win.

The Helly deal makes sense for them, maybe not for two firsts though. I think Helly gets them back into cup contention, and that’s Dubas written all over him. I think they will peddle that pick and try to get Buffalo in a bidding war for Helly.

Dumbas traded 6 1st round picks in his 5 years with the Leafs. He lost/traded Hyman, Kadri and Anderson while adding ZERO players to the core. Expect him to overpay at the deadline for UFAs. Expect him to sign or make deals bringing in contracts like Mrazek, Ritchie, Murray etc. that he needs to trade picks with to dump. Dumbas has traded many of the Leaf picks for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026….Seriously what idiot handcuffs a team 4 years in the future to bring in mediocre players?

He lost Hyman because he'd priced himself out of Toronto. He lost Anderson because Freddie had a down year and Campbell took over as the more certain starter that year. I can't really tell with Kadri, but I can reasonably believe he, like Hyman, was a cap casualty.
Despite his poor moves, the Leafs were constantly a threat during his tenure. Hyman and maybe Kadri show something that happen to good teams - they have to replace some of their players with cheaper options because they can't afford to keep the same roster. Same thing happened in recent years to the Lightning, Avalance, and Golden Knights as well.
Will Dubas make mistakes? Of course. No one's perfect. But something else he can do (and probably has done) is learn from those mistakes. So, no, I don't expect your pessimism to come true.

Moving either Guentzel or Pettersson makes no sense for the Penguins at all. Moving them for those returns makes even less sense. The Pens could get much more for both than that if they thought they had to trade them.

The price isn't bad or anything, but the Blues should not be splurging on a winger, let alone a UFA they cannot afford both this summer and next.

He inherited Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares (JT was signing here no matter what), Reilly, Kadri, Hyman, Anderson. He was gift wrapped a top team. He squandered entire drafts at the deadline for nothing but 4 games of Nick Foligno. You don’t hire a rookie to be in charge of a multi-billion dollar franchise, especially when his perfomance directly effects the livelihoods of others and millions of dollars.

Carter blocks. Wings decline Petry. Pens decline the VAN trade for sure. Probably the STL trade as well
