During the intermission of the Cup Final last night, Friedman reported that NJ could look to trade Damon Severson's rights if we can't sign him. Could a deal like this work? Let me know what you guys think.

It could be another team and it could maybe even be a 3rd round pick. I just picked Vancouver because they're not in the same conference and they need defense.

I'd guess it's more like a 6 or the 7 TB got for Goodrow

If his rights do get traded, let's revisit this. I don't think it'll be that low.

With the Canucks' cap issues at the moment, I'm not sure they could even afford Severson - and he won't sign for a "reasonable deal" with anyone. He's the top UFA defenseman on the market and a RHD to boot - if he doesn't re-sign with NJ and hits the open market, he'll be seeking - and teams will be lining up to pay him - $6-7M at max term. Vancouver would have to shed both Myers and OEL off the books - neither of which will be easy to do - in order to be able to cover that hit.

I think Severson is a much more valued UFA than goodrow

Ok so the 7 becomes maybe a 5 he's an UFA . Clearly you know he's not re-signing with you or you wouldn't be trading his negotiating rights. How many teams are really going to be bidding for those? I think you take it and run like Husain Bolt if offered a 5 if you know it's done.

You never get a 3rd round pick for rights with a pending ufa during offseason . Closer to a 6th or 7th round pick.

Good points, i would say it's probably not worth it for Vancouver to give up more than a 5th or 6th.

Cool , I just don't see teams starting a bidding war for negotiating rights to a UFA maybe they get a 5. That's a big MAYBE!

A 3rd would probably have to be a superstar who is pretty much guaranteed to since in a particular place since the difference between signing a 8n year deal vs 7 would make a big difference. Although, usually those guys are looking to test free agency if they are walking as ufas.

Like I said earlier to the other guy, if Severson's rights get traded lets revisit this. I don't think it'll be as low as a 6th or 7th. I think a 4th should get it done.

Some ppl are are so clueless, sometimes. The homerism is unbearable. Hyman rights were being shopped before Edmonton and Holland wouldnt even give a 7th to Dubas!

Ville Husso, last summer.
Fwiw I don’t think that Severson’s rights are worth more than 4th or 5th, I’d be happy to just get anything of value for trading those rights.

Trading rights is like having a garage sale get whatever you can and throw the rest away at the end of the day.

I’m not set that Severson would sign in Vancouver. That’s where right handed defensemen go to die

Husso is the one. I forgot about him ,however he was 27 and a top ten Goalie. I still stand by the statement if NJ gets offered a 5 they should take it and run like Husain Bolt.

Big difference between Goodrow and Severson…Barclay was a bottom-sixer. Severson may be the most sought-after free agent to hit market this summer.

Allvin better already have his cap dumps in place if he's willing to sign Severson so soon. If he doesn't...probably not the smartest move.

Players often lean in free agency towards teams with: 1) winning records/history; 2) former teammates they've played with; 3) coaches they've enjoyed previously playing under; and 4) big contract offers.

In Severson's case, the Canucks' cap situation disqualifies them from the 4th category and the other 3 don't apply either.

I wonder if Nashville may be a suitor that appeals to him - their franchise has been a consistent playoff team before this season; they just hired Brunette, who was on the bench in NJ last season; and they have cap space to take Severson on if they want.

Identifying which players should be cap dumps (i.e. Myers, OEL, Garland) is one thing and the easier task for a GM - finding another team willing to take on those cap hits is another and the harder task to pull off.
