So you're getting 3 1sts, but giving up 3 prospects, 3 2nds and 2 3rds, just to take on 3 2 yr deals = 10mil in bad contracts?

I dont think any of those teams accept, but it doesn;t sound good and you're basically putting a 5 yr plan in place and wasting Caulfield, Suzuki, Dach, etc....

I think that Montreal needs high end talent, so with picking at #5 and #11 they should strengthen the rebuild. They get a forward at #5 and a D man at %11.

After this year Montreal could choose to buy out one of the contracts at the end of this season too, especially since the Alzner buyout is done after this year.

I could see it for this year, but I think:

the price that you're paying is quite high
the loss of cap space in 2024 limits other options (especially when you have so many dead contracts already
the entire hoffman dump is so expensive
the delay of the picks you're getting in 2025, which won't probably pay off until 2027-2028
the waste of the next probably 3 seasons of the youth you have now (Barron, Caulfield, Suzuki, Harris, etc...) means that they might be stagnant/undeveloped/ or gone in one way or another by the time your 3 shots in the dark in 2023 and 3 shots in the dark in 2025 picks arrive

Ideally none of those are bad, except the dump of Hoffman, but the question is....why? Maybe you do make a couple of those for more picks, but in the meantime, there are some high end guys there, but you'd be better off playing the kids, dumping the old/bad guys eating cap, (armia, Gallagher, hoffman, edmundsen, savard, allen, etc....because they are ultimnately standing in the way "cap wise" to really rebuild and become a "dumping ground" and setting yourself up to either get the best UFAs and playing the kids to see what you have in them.

Penguins can easily buy out Granlund for cheap. If you want to pick up a cap dump look at Jeff Carter.

What would you pay to dump the Carter contract?

I set the price high for the Hoffman trade, true. Maybe take out a draft pick or drop one of the 2nds to a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Frankly, I think that Montreal will not miss the prospects that I traded. They have 3rd line potential or 4th pairing potential at best when you consider the following possible future lineup (which could be the lineup soon):

Caufield Suzuki Slafkovsky
Leonard Dach Anderson
RHP/Roy Beck Mesar/Farrell
Pezzetta Evans Gallagher
Tuch Rohrer Kapanen

Guhle Sandin Pellikka
Hutson Barron
Harris Xhekaj
Mailloux Engstrom (no such thing as an 8th D-man on a roster, but still

Cheap-ish free agent goalie signing once Armia, Myers and Dvorak are off the books after 2024-2025 ($12,000,000.00)
Cal Peterson (backup goalie, waiting for Hrabal)
Michael Hrabal (drafted with Florida pick)

Sure. If it is Carter rather than Granlund that gets the 1st to Montreal I would do it.

Lol Petersen's contact is bad, but LA doesn't need to give up a 1st to get rid of him.

I see L.A. as a team on the rise, though, so in 2025 that 1st round pick should be in the 20s, don't you think?

Doesn't matter, it's not fair value. Petersen has a very cheap buyout. Only issue, is the first years cap hit is 3M+ which is why they are looking to trade him. After year 1, his buyout cap hit is barely over 1M.

I wouldn't give up more than a 2nd and a 3rd, and I doubt the Kings would either.

I could see taking out the 2nd from L.A. and Montreal adding a B prospect but that is as far as I would go. But we do not have to agree on this. That is fine.
McSorley liked this.

Canucks do get other assets in the trade though (a 2nd rounder, a depth defenceman and a guy who scored decently in the AHL when he came over), and they are only moving down 3 spots and saving about $3M in cap space (probably enough money to sign a good 3rd line player right now). But if you think that it is off then that is obviously your prerogative.

The last thing we need is another winger and Its a waste of a first. We dont need to use a first to move Myers. It would be much better if we used our first plus to move Oel.IMHO.

Ekman Larsson + Vancouver's first (#11) and for Montreal's [Florida's] first (#31) and 2nd round pick [#37} + Jayden Struble??

OEL is a Big contract to move.

Something like that would work in my opinion.Oel will be hard to move but i think our first is the ace up our sleeve.Again just my own opinions.

Yes, get a player put him on the 4th D pairing and Granlund on the 5th line... absolute genius
