Fishing for a Finn and a Forbort

Description
Seattle is poised for a fairly quiet offseason, but that doesn't mean there aren't moves to be made. This is my latest attempt to explore some ways the Kraken could round out their roster and prepare to take another step forward next year.

I made this ACGM with an eye towards keeping as much quality depth as possible. That was the key to the Kraken's success last year, and I wanted to make sure that depth remained while still retaining the opportunity for big moves down the road. I have Kartye and Wright starting in the AHL to get consistent playing time and being first in line for call-ups should the need arise. However, one or both of these young talented forwards could very easily challenge for a spot in the lineup right out of the gate. Similarly, Evans starts in the AHL, but should be contributing to the main roster in short order.

Besides extending their key RFAs, the most important tasks Seattle has are to fill the hole left by the likely departing Soucy and to figure out the backup goalie situation. For the former, I arranged a deal for a veteran stopgap to hold down the fort until Evans seizes the role. For the latter, I swung a trade from a position of relative depth to address a position of relative weakness, gaining a young backup goalie who still has room to grow. The idea is that this roster will once again be a playoff contender, but with enough flexibility to possibly take some big swings, either at the trade deadline or in the following offseason.

As always, helpful feedback is appreciated! Cheers, Go Kraken, and Go Firebirds!

1.
SEA
  1. Luukkonen, Ukko-Pekka
Additional Details:
UPL might find himself the victim of a numbers game in Buffalo. Levi is the goalie of the present and future, and the Sabres may be looking at veteran upgrades to pair with him. If that's the case, UPL would find himself on the outside looking in, and it may behoove Buffalo to trade him rather than risk losing him on waivers. Seattle would get a young goalie with upside and recent NHL experience to solidify the backup goalie spot behind Grubauer.
BUF
  1. Fleury, Cale [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Fleury was the 7th defenseman in Seattle last year, but proved he's deserving of a full-time role, as evidenced by his play when called upon. Sadly with Larsson, Borgen, and Schultz on the right side, he probably won't get that chance in Seattle. He would in Buffalo, as a defensively minded RD who could grow alongside Buffalo's young LD.
2.
SEA
  1. Forbort, Derek
Additional Details:
The idea here is Seattle weaponizes their remaining cap space to get a decent, defensively minded LD who can eat up time on the penalty kill and fill Soucy's spot in the lineup, while Boston gets much needed cap flexibility to help fill out the current roster. If other teams are interested in Forbort Seattle could conceivably throw a late round pick Boston's way to complete a deal.

Yeah, I would do this. Our right d depth is nonexistent, fleury would help. Goalies are bananas, upl has been around for several years, never seems to consistently be good, mostly just inconsistent. Could he be a good goalie on a different team- yep. Is it worth looking for a stable vet to pair with Levi and get something useful for the organization- yep.

I would add pick to bring Borgen back. We need a legit top 4 D right now and Fleury could be a wild card and unlikely to see much ice-time.

How high of a pick would you need to add on to get the deal done with Cale instead (if thats even something you'd look into)

Just curious on the thought of buying out Driedger. I'd kind of like to see him get a fair shot but that's just me. I'm almost willing to put money down the Kraken will take a goalie in the first three rounds of the draft this year, and it may wind up being Milic who could go right to the AHL if they sign him.

I mean if Seattle sent over Fleury and a pick, would you accept a second+Cale for UPL, but I'd probably do that trade too, assuming Seattle can land one of the 3-6 defensemen in the draft (Simashev, Dragicevic, Gulyayev, or Willander), though idk if they'll be there by that point

Fleury would be at best our 7th defensemen

I'm confused. I think he was asking what pick Seattle would have to add to fleury to get upl. Although, I would add one of our seconds to upl to get borgen back- if I misunderstood the question.

Probably. I don't think upl on his own is bringing back much. I like the borgen idea better.

I mean 2nd + UPL for Borgen, not Fleury

If Seattle offer 2nd + Fleury for UPL, i would take it

Fair enough. The issue with trading Borgen is that he has established himself as an integral part of Seattle's defensive corps, so any realistic trade return won't replace what he brings to the team on the ice. For that reason he is more valuable to the Kraken as a player than a trade chip, which is why I think don't think Borgen is going anywhere.

I think Driedger will get every opportunity to reclaim the backup goalie role, he's just so much of an unknown right now. I doubt Seattle will buy him out unless they really need to, in the event he's not the backup goalie he'd provide useful AHL depth. I do agree with you that the Kraken will probably take a goalie with one of their many draft picks this year, and I'd be a fan of them grabbing Milic.
