If Dubas goes trade heavy who do we target

Description
Gibson and Samsonov would be possible goalies but I don’t see it. I think we sign a UFA.

Arvidsson is a rental because we will need most of his cap space to pay Jake. Carter also comes off the books next summer, freeing up 3.12 million.

Those goalie yikes.

Knight, Hill, Gibson, Hellebuyck. Much better options out there that will available in free agency or trade.

Mackey/Shattenkirk is not a solution

Trade Jake for a top4 D and good bottom 6.

Zucker is better than Arvidsson. Trade for Arvy but he goes on the 3rd line.

I like Gibson but he isn't worth what Ana would require.

I am not sold on Korpsy

Overpay for Cat.

Ottawa will give you DeBrincat for the three picks.

We are not trading Sokolov.

Probably not a goalie, at least not one that would cost more than a mid rd pick, probably more "depth" guys (2nd liners) rather than "stars" like a Debrincat/Keller

Why? I'd be surprised if Sokolov plays more than 100 NHL games.

I'd do this trade, the 14th OA pick this year is a good asset that won't be beat by many

If you'd do this trade, then you should do this one as well.

One idea I think makes a lot of sense is having a package with one of POJ or Smith for either a top 4 LHD or a middle 6 forward. Say Sam Girard or whoever the Flames would part with on D, or Arvidsson or maybe Vrana for high risk/high reward up front.

There are few goalie options I really like. Hellebuyck would cost an arm and a leg, assuming we could win the bidding war for his services. Same deal with Ullmark/Saros if they're even available. Do we even have the assets for someone of that caliber? If not, basically the only UFA options I like are Adin Hill or bringing back Jarry. I still think Jars has what it takes.

I don't really think we have the assets to go big game hunting. How many teams will be in on the likes of Debrincat, Ehlers, any of Toronto's Core 4 if they move? We don't really need to add to the core anyway, we need stronger depth. Dubas and Sullivan have put an emphasis on speed. That probably means some targets on the younger side.

Yes, I initially didn't want to trade ADB for futures but if we fill the needs smartly after that, then no problem

Please no Gibson lol. I feel like it's been discussed so much on here and every time we come to the conclusion it's not a good trade.

Samsonov could be interesting depending on what he costs to acquire and sign. Although if we're holding playoff performances against Jarry, we have to do the same with Samsonov. I'd love for them to make a run at ROR. Arvidsson could be a nice acquisition

Someone is going to overpay Jarry simply because there aren’t good goalies as UFAs. I just don’t want it to be us.

That could be the case - it's tough to say. I'm probably paying Jarry anything up to 5mil. If he goes over, I'd still rather sign a guy like Anderson than trade for Gibson though. Or take a flier on a cheaper alternative. If we're giving up assets - I'd go all in for Hellebuyck

My preferred goalies:

1 Pay 4-4.5 for Andersen

2 Pay 3-3.5 for Korpisalo

3 Trade 2024 2nd for Samsonov

4 Trade for a reclamation project like Campbell because at least some assets would come with him

5 Sign Jarry for 3.5-4 and no more than 3 years.

I think you're way undervaluing Jarry - unless we find out in the offseason that he's basically crippled. He's the best UFA available. Unless someone's throwing like like crazy money and term I still think he's the best option. But I think we've had this conversation before haha.

Mine would be
1) Jarry if he comes in 4.5-5mil
2) Anderson if Jarry demands over 5
3) Mortgage the future even further for Hellebuyck
4) Take a flier on guys like Samsonov, Korpisalo, Hill etc

I believe Jarry is closer to on his way to Murray territory than he is to Fleury territory. I will say that goalies in general are a mess to evaluate and there are only a few elite ones in the league.

I mean - I wouldn't argue against that statement. MAF is an all time goalie - and I'm not saying Jarry will ever be that. But Murray showed clear decline year over year after 2018 - which Jarry hasn't. We also had a clear successor to Murray in Jarry - so there was no reason to keep Murray. We don't have that right now. Jarry was on pace for a 3rd top 7 Vezina finish in 4 years before he got hurt in Januray. Bad goalies don't do that. We can go back and forth all night on Jarry's injury stuff. If he has chronic hip issues I'm fine moving on - but a healthy Jarry is clearly a great goalie. And we probably won't ever know how severe the injury problems are unless they get rid of him.

But I definitely agree - there's a handful of elite goalies like your Vas, Saros, Hellebuyck, Shesterkin that you take no matter what. Outside of those elites, there's really no guarantee on what type of play you may get. You're just playing odds. But based on all the UFAs available - I would say Jarry has the best odds of having the best season. Pending hip recovery of course. There's no perfect option - they all have caveats
