  1. Höglander, Nils [RFA Rights]
  2. Podkolzin, Vasily
  3. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
This makes sense for the Leafs because this is a great return for a guy who will command north of 9 million next year and likely won't be re-signed. In an ideal world Nylander gets traded for a young top 4 defenceman or a bonafide defenceman in his prime, like the Hall for Larsson deal. That's the best outcome. But getting two younger and cheaper wingers who still have potential along with a high pick is still pretty good.
VAN
  1. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
Nylander signs a long term extension to play with Pettersson on the 1st line.

Why does Vancouver do this trade? After acquiring Hronek it is clear that the Canucks want to make the playoffs next year. What's the point of holding onto the 11th pick when the last time they picked that high it didn't turn out so great. Maybe Podkolzin gets better and becomes a top six power forward, but more likely than not guys who are picked around the 10th spot need a few years before stepping into the league. And the Canucks don't have that kind of time because Hughes and Pettersson want to win sooner rather than later.

Vancouver probably declines and then Toronto doesn’t have enough to pay for TK

Canucks aren’t going to give up that much for a winger

Canucks don't have the capspace for that.

I hope Nylander hits free agency next summer and signs in Van though. Would love to see him play with Petey.

Canucks easily decline. We don’t have the cap space for Nylander, and the last thing we need is more wingers. We also can’t afford to give up so many futures. We have one of the worst prospect pools in the league, we need to keep our picks and young guys. Trading 11 plus two young guys for a guy who doesn’t even help our needs is a terrible decision.

Seems like a lot for a Nylander rental. Maybe switch 1st to a 2nd and mid conditional pick.

If you took a look at the Canucks roster, it should be pretty evident that defense and center core needs upgrades much more than wingers

There's no shot we(Nucks) do that. It's WAY too much.

I actually agree with your valuation of Nylander, perhaps a touch steep.
But this move makes no sense for Van.
