Ek has more value for a team like the wild straight up than Tavares.

Yeah, even if Tavares would approve that trade, there is zero chance the Wild could afford Tavares. At the moment, we have 9 million to sign 6-7 players. Tavares has a cap hit of ELEVEN million dollars. I won't go into the trade itself, just wanted to make clear why this is a non-starter of an idea.

I would be absolutely shocked if the Leafs traded Matthews. Unless he pulls a Tkachuk and says I'm 100% gone, they're not going to move him.

That being said, if the situation is similar and he comes with an extension negotiated (which is the only likely result at this point) LA is likely giving up this and maybe more. And they'd still win the trade.

Id argue that id rather have Clarke for his career than matthews. Matthews could go ufa and could get both in a scenario. Clarke has the makings to be an insane dman that is rhd. Those are the rareist thing to find.

Everybody loves prospects, but let's consider the fact that a centre who has scored 60 goals in a season might have more value than a 20 year old defenceman who's played 9 NHL games.

The Kings potentially could get Matthews as a UFA, you're absolutely correct, but they're bidding against 31 other teams at that point. But I don't really see him going to UFA anyway, and I think anybody trading for a top-3 player in the NHL (top-5 at WORST) is happy to pay the price.

I'm also MUCH MUCH happier if the Leafs pay Matthews whatever he wants and keep him

You could argue that Matthews has that kind of value after his 60 goal season but after a down year + UFA after this year, no way

It seems that Toronto fans think that all the other GM's in the NHL will just help out the Maple Leafs at their own expense. Time to become realistic. Toronto is probably not trading any of their top players.

How is it different if he plays out his last season under this contract with the Kings? Won't he still be a free agent in July 2024?

Trading for Auston Matthews now doesn't put us in any better position to sign him than waiting until next summer.

Isn't the goal for the Kings, as for any other team, to build a well rounded team?
I mean, it would be kind of counter productive imo to get rid of a likely bright future in Byfield/Clarke, and top it off with one of their top forwards aswell in Fiala.
And you're saying that the Kings still would win the trade even if they added more on top, I seriously doubt it.
