Philly: Gets really good value for Prov, even though they take Petty as well

LA: Receives valuable cap space

Columbus: What the heck are they doing

CBJ overpay, feel like they didn't have to pay a premium for retention unless more moves are coming... Just seem like they could have waited for cap strapped teams to trade away D help instead of paying a premium from a team who has cap space.

Philly did great

Columbus did very well (though really odd move considering where they are as an organization. Just looking at pure value)

LA did terrible. In the end to essentially trade Petersen at 3 million, they paid a 2nd, Walker and a prospect?

The offseason is indeed starting off with a bang. Pretty fair deal all around. Columbus gets another top/second pair LHD to help with Werenski, parting with a surplus 1st round pick and early 2nd rounder. The price might be a tad steep, but the market was set with Chychrun from earlier this season. Hopefully gets Provorov to bounce back to his good days by giving him a steady defensive parter.

For LA, the numbers are what matter here. They take on an effective $9,212,500 in real money in exchange for $5,625,000 in cap savings in 23-24 and $2,975,000 in savings in 24-25. Taking from its surplus of prospects, moving Helge Grans and 54th overall to create valuable cap space (opportunity cost) to help solidify its team as a true contender in the West.

And for Philadelphia, man does Danny B hit a homerun. Able to move a player that doesn’t fit the culture or window and save those Comcast big wigs almost 3 million is quite the deal. 22nd, 2 future 2nd round picks, and Grans for Provorov and taking on an additional cap space of $900,000 this year and saving $1,750,000 the next? He gets to replenish the picks lost from the Fletcher area and still has key trade chips (Hart, Konecny, Hayes) to play with?

Wow, LAK gets SOME cap space, but with that retention it's not as much as you'd think. $5.6M this year $3M next year (also still need to at least fill that roster spot OR subtract $1.15M because that's Cal's AHL contract reduction...making it $4.45M this year and $1.85M next year...). A 2nd round pick and pretty decent prospect is what it takes to dump cap right now. Great news for AZ, ANA, and CHI.

I love this for Philly, CBJ does fine, Provorov's still a good D and you only paid a 1st + 2nd to get him retained, LA got absolutely robbed, you retained on Provorov and paid a 2nd + Grans to dump Petersen and Walker??? Why LA

Your analysis acts like walker had negative value. It's poor asset management

A 1st for Ivan Provorov even at 30% retention is way too much to part with for such an unremarkable defender.
I see little upside and a whole lotta downside from CBJ's perspective.
Between the Gudbranson signing, Björkstrand trade and now this move, it seems to me that Kekkäläinen is incapable of finding the right guys to take this team forward.
Getting someone like Sean Walker in, who coincidentally is part of this deal going to the Flyers, would've achieved the exact same thing as trading for Provorov, but a fraction of the cost.

Briere made out like a bandit here. The Flyers may finally have a somewhat competitive GM.
Fantastic first trade for this man.

Kings have both veteran defenders and defensive prospects in excess meaning the amount of value they are giving up for cap space gained is relatively manageable for them.
Spence, Björnfot and Clarke should all be close to ready to step into full time NHL roles.
However it's still a lot of value the Kings are giving up for that cap space which could set a very high price on future cap dumps for this summer, probably a fair bit higher than previously expected (looking at you Vancouver fans).

PHI could likely get a little something for Walker half retained at the deadline on top of all this. Tidy work for a rookie GM.

He may have positive value somewhere, but the value of an additional 2.65M to spend on other areas rather than a 3rd pairing defensemen this year is what they are paying for. The opportunity cost is what they are getting in return.

There's reason to believe that the Flyers D corps actually got better through this trade:

LA gets cap space to extend Vilardi and Gavrikov and potentially add Hart or Hellybuyck in another trade

CBJ get a Dman who in a lesser role may do much better

Philly kickstarts the rebuild
