GM OF THE YEAR

Created by: arman2002k
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The new Leafs GM has ultimately decided to give the core four as well as Sheldon Keefe one more chance to prove they have what it takes to go on a deep playoff run. This comes as the Panthers sweep the Hurricanes. Showing that the Leafs core four’s performance wasn’t the problem. Sergei Bobrovsky was the problem. He had put up the best playoff goaltending performance since Patrick Roy in 1993. The Leafs easily had their best postseason run in decades, and the new GM has decided to run it back with the same core and the same head coach, but not without some noticeable shakeups. ROR signs a 5 year extension worth an AAV of $5,000,000 and this comes as ROR decided it is in the best interest of his family and his heart that he spends the rest of his career playing on the team he cheered for growing up. He may have gotten more money going somewhere else, but the term was desirable enough to sign the extension. Michael Bunting has made the same decision. The new GM was more than happy to sign Bunting onto a contract worth slightly less than his actual market value. David Kampf is given a 5 year extension as well. However, the new GM is still concerned the Leafs team is too soft to go on a deep playoff run. Which is why the new GM signs UFA forwards Brenden Lemieux and Zach Parise to help bolster the playoff type performance needed to win in the playoffs. Acciari is resigned for the same reason. With a strengthened group of forwards. The new GM is still concerned that the Defensive core of the group is too small and lacks the kind of depth needed to go far in the playoffs. Which is why Brad Treliving makes a huge UFA signing in Ryan Graves, a massive Left handed defensemen that can play a really strong physical and shutdown game. With those two signings, the Leafs defence is now a nightmare for any opponent. Luke Schenn is also extended to a 1 year contract to help bolster the right D. Auston Matthews signs a 1 year extension deal worth $10,000,000. Once cap space opens up from the Tavares and Brodie contract. Last, but not least. With the trade for Connor Hellebuyck at the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs go on to win a Stanley Cup, and a division championship. Brad Treliving is crowned GM of the Year!

I would rather keep Sammy than spend that much for 1 year of Hellebuyck.

Keep sammy. Save the cap and prospects. There’s simply no improvement scoring wise here. The defence is better, tho.

All those RFAs except for Sammy are getting league minimum.

Lemieux was a healthy scratch most of last year. He’s a one year show me deal at league minimum. Still, I wouldn’t touch him, he’s too busy trying to prove he’s tough taking dumb penalty after dumb penalty. He’ll get suspended more than Bunting and Kadri combined.

Love all the other signing although I don’t see Acciari taking a pay cut. Ryan Graves is a huge risk at 4 million plus. Is he that much better than Holl? Parise was also quoted as saying he’s only going back to the Island.

The problem with the Leafs has always been and will forever be depth and supplemental scoring. This mock up provides neither.

Bad free agency signings and ill use of the cap will destroy this team. Graves, Bunting and ROR at those cap hits scream trouble.

If available the leafs should target Soucy (max 3.5) and Bertuzzi (max 6) stabilize the team and address a lot of problems that plagued them this run.

Look for players that have low trade value and use that to your advantage. How much is Garland going to cost at most a 3rd if money is retained?

Move Murray for the Mrazek package and use that 2nd and your 1st next year with your prospects to make a splash at center. PLD seems like a longshot because the Jets want to compete but that package for Henrique half retained would be great especially if they can take the Muzzin LTIR as well.

Lastly take a chance on players with low value but high upside if they work in the given system, Monahan or Drouin would be solid at contracts no more than 2M

The leafs approach should be Depth with flexibility and the ability to roll different line combinations. Not throwing insane money at players that will not move that needle.

Bertuzzi Matthews Nylander
Tavares Henrique Marner
Knies Monahan Järnkrok
Garland Holmberg Acciari

Rielly Schenn
McCabe Brodie
Soucy Liljegren
