Signing your 5th round draft pick to an ELC is a win, even if they only play in the AHL.

How's that a win then? I'd rather sign a FA with more upside than AHL potential. Waste of a contract spot in your situation.

Even just competition during your training camp is better than most 5th rounders manage to do.

Bridgeport is within spitting distance of New York, so you can use them as an emergency call-up, even if they are a healthy scratch at the NHL level.

I think this alone is enough to make the Islanders happy they picked him in the fifth round.

They have 13 more contract slots and only $5.3 million in cap room. Contract slots are not an issue.

5th round picks have NHL potential, its a cheap gamble, some will make it to the NHL, some get stuck in the minors. Any ufa with upside is either expensive, has baggage- or has proven to be nothing more than a fringe player- and those are always available- and cheap. There are also limits on how many NHL veterans you can have in your AHL lineup, they want to develop players- not just ice a bunch of older ex nhl fringe playes.

Eetu plays a very Islanders kinda game. Physical, has no quit in him. After some seasoning he might be playable in a spesific role.

I'm not saying this guy will bust, OP stated that it would be a win even if he topped out as an AHL Forward
