Playoff push

Created by: RyanMclovin
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2023
Published: Jun. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team still has over 10 million dollars in cap space to resign rfas next season and don’t lose a lot of draft capital. On paper I have no doubts this team would be able to reach the post season and potentially go on a little run.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. DeBrincat, Alex [RFA Rights]
OTT
  1. Chiarot, Ben ($750,000 retained)
  2. Zadina, Filip
  3. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (DET)
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Ottawa recieves tons of draft capital and a young scorer to add to their already young core. On top of this they recieve Chairot who is admittedly an overpay contract but recieve an extra second round pick an a bit of retention to even out the deal. Although Chairot wouldn’t be their first choice on improving their D end he will be good in a depth role and will bring physicality and experience to the roster.
2.
BOS
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Because Boston is so cap strapped and will be looking to resign Swayman they might have to ship out Ullmark as a cap casualty despite his great play this season. I’m this trade Boston recieves a middle 6 winger on a very good deal for what he brings to help maintain their scoring next year and get some higher end picks in upcoming drafts in exchange for the Ullmark who they might have to ship out anyway.
3.
DET
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. 2023 7th round pick (EDM)
  3. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. 2023 6th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Detroit gets a very hard working good bottom 6 forward in exchange for some pick swaps. Edmonton gets cap relief. This is a win win trade for both parties.

See, now this might be a DeBrincat deal I could get behind. And the contract 👌🏾

Buddy we're locked with Chiarot and they don't need LHD.
Don't want Ullmark, prob just another Ned situation.

Well no because Ullmark is much better then Ned lol.

Ullmark was putting up better numbers on a bottoms 5 Buffalo then Ned was on a bottom 10 Detroit team.

I never once heard any Detroit fan say Ned was their MVP where as a lot of buffalo fans called Ullmark their MVP when he played for them and was the backbone that won them games

Yeah that Buffalo team reeked. I'll ask my uncle or brother about who they considered their MVP for the post-Miller era; don't recall it being Ullmark but not sure.

Not to say Ullmark will drop to the AHL, but I certainly don't think he can sustain what he did here.

Ullmark is not even comparable to Ned and worst comes to worst they run a 1A 1B with him and Husso, Chairot can play both sides and would be in the bottom four and they get retention on the contract aswell as draft capital so the trade is fair they get an overpriced player and a ton of picks with a young scorer for their young core in exchange for an expiring contract that needs to be traded.

A high 2nd and 3rd with a great winger on a cheap contract? Would be exactly what Boston needs also have to remember depending on their situation they would have to clear cap and this might be one of the only ways to do it.

they don‘t really need a winger, their biggest need is a center (prospect) or picks.

Can’t afford to resign Bert and might need to trade Hall for cap space very well could need a winger.

A 17th overall two high seconds and a young scorer and a player who’s is admittedly not on a good contract but would help their weak blue line and bring physicality and mentorship is a hard package to turn away for one player they have to trade anyway.

You have to take into account Debrincat had a down year and they would be profiting well over what they paid for him in this trade.

one year does not make a player with a history of scoring 40 goals, also if DET were to call OTT, the starting ask would be 9th+17th++ .

Cat was shooting almost 5% bellow his average, most players would gladly take a "down" year of 27 goals and 66 points.

OTT traded Hoffman to SJS for less than trade him to a divisional rival, no chance they trade Cat to DET who are both competing for the same limited playoff spots without a big overpay.

"History"? He's scored 40 goals twice, two season apart form each other. And going from 78pts to 66 is going to lower his value. It is very unlikely the return is what you paid for him. Cope with it and move on.

Not the worst package for Ullmark, but BOS could prob get a more valuable return elsewhere (young C)

Also trading him within the div is highly unlikely

Of course unless that team makes the best offer. Oilers traded Gretzky to a “division rival.”

Key words: they have to trade him.
If he indeed informed the Sens that he would not sign long term, they will get pennies on the dollar because teams know they can sign him without trading assets in 1 year.

Sens definitely aren’t interested in taking on a 32 year old who would be making 4M a year for 4 more years who would be their 5th best left defenceman

What would you propose Detroit adds to make it fair?
