3way with COLWPGVAN

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2023
Published: Jun. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
COL in: Dubois 8x8 + Dermott + VAN 2023 1st (#11)
COL out: Toews + Newhook + COL 2023 1st (#27)

VAN in: Toews (likely re-signs before UFA as a BC native)
VAN out: Podkolzin + Dermott + 2023 1st (#11)

WPG in: Podkolzin + Newhook + COL 2023 1st (#27)
WPG out: Dubois

Additional picks/prospects can be added in either trade to balance value if needed, but this would be a framework.

Avs get a 2C with term which fills their biggest need. Vancouver gets a top pair Dman from BC. Winnipeg get two young roster players with team-control for 4+ years and a 1st that they can flip for further roster help.

Easy decline from Vancouver. No cap space to take on toews without sending money back. and as good as he is, one year left on his deal means it’s not worth it for vancouver to give up so much for him

Offersheeting Miller would be significantly cheaper for the Canucks instead. They aren't giving up multiple high-end assets for a pending UFA

Not a good deal for Vancouver. We need a RHD not a LHD. And losing the 11OA in this draft is a deal breaker.

Good for COL and WPG. Not so much for VAN it seems.

Thanks for the feedback.

Toews is from BC so I assume he would be willing to re-sign with term. As for capspace, Avs could use an additional forward so maybe one of Kuzmenko/Garland/Beauvillier/Mikheyev could be worked into the deal if money needs to go out. Perhaps even via Arizona or some team who retain a bit to reduce the caphit.

Maybe #11 is too much value, but I assume that Toews would re-sign. Maybe change the #11 to VAN 2024 1st and send that pick to WPG instead.

you honestly think sakic would allow trading a 1st, Toews, Pdkolzin, etc. for a terrible PLD contract is worth while? "So Dumb"- Shoresy why not chase Miller from the start or offer a deal for Monohan.

COL in: Dubois 8x8 + Dermott + VAN 2023 1st (#11)
COL out: Toews + Newhook + COL 2023 1st (#27)

That looks like a pretty good deal for Colorado when you consider that they need to move money from LHD to 2C, along with the fact that Dubois is younger than Toews.

Moving from #27 to #11 is also pretty valuable, though Vancouver may think that's too rich a price.

Whatever the case Avs would be getting a 1st in either 2023 or 2024, or Podkolzin, along with Dermott who would be a fine 3LHD for them. Seems like a decent deal from the Avs perspective.

Further to my comments above, this roster leaves the Avs with $3.3m to fill two middle 6 wing spots for a 22 man roster. They can focus on adding wingers at the deadline.

The core of the roster would all be locked in for 2+ years with no significant contracts until Rantanen in 2025, by which time the cap is projected to have risen to accommodate his raise. If needed Manson will be a pending UFA in 2025 and can be moved to open capspace then too.

If Landeskog returns in the summer of 2024 and cap is needed you can move Manson with 2 years left since his NTC expires then.

Avs simply need a valuable 2C, not a circus act to get there. Landy out gives them a massive opportunity to strike on someone that A) is gonna rack points and FO Wins, B) a 2C that WANTS to play for the Avs. id rather see Girard dealt, EJ league min to keep Toews and Byram in an Avs sweater. Newhook needs a proper opportunity to control a line but injuries being constant havent given him that chance. Something tells me PLD is a locker room issue. This is my opinion.

What 2C who racks up points and wins face-offs are you going to be able to acquire with Girard?

yeah this is where i get stuck. You can probably trade just a 1st for Hayes, a 1st plus a prospect for Kuzy, and a 1st plus prospect plus something else for PLD, Schiefle, Shmaltz etc.

Honestly, the avs need to hope for a Giroux-style "I only want to go to Florida" treatment from any of these names. Trading newhook for another center just creates another problem, albeit further down your lineup.

Better to have a problem in the bottom 6 than in a crucial top 6C spot. Bottom 6 wings are easy to find in free agency and at the deadline.

Do you think Vancouver would have interest in another small LHD, given that they already have Quinn?

I doubt it. I think they need a LD more then most people but a Girard type player doesn't really fit in VAN
