Not a huge fan of trading a 1st for Schiefle. If we trade the 1st it should be for a younger player that we can deal when it's time to rebuild for a good return.

It's the 2023 pick so I'm confused as to why you would trade it for a younger player to just trade him away when it's rebuild time instead of either using the pick to draft a player that will be around and ready for when the rebuild starts or trade the pick for a younger player to address a need now? I wouldn't personally use that pick for another forward regardless. If it is traded, it should be for either a top pairing left handed defenseman or a competent starting netminder. The only thing I agree with is not using on Sheifele. It doesn't net any positives. He will be underutilized at 3rd line C especially for his salary. Plus I highly doubt he would want to assume that role and be given lesser quality linemates and he possesses a modified no-trade clause. OPs entire post is filled with poor financial allocations and asset management, aside from the lopsided trade proposals.

For that package I would be demanding half retention on Scheifele.

You'll need it to because Jarry and Debrincat will ask for more and you only have a 20 man roster

What I mean is trade it for someone like Noah Hanfin. He's 26 years old, by the time we rebuild he'll be 28-29 and still have a lot of value. He can help us compete for 2-3 years and then when we rebuild trade him to jump start it. Get a first back. The goal at the rebuild start will be to get as many picks as possible and get superstars in the draft. We have no players that will hold trade value in 2-3 years due to age and NMC, which will hurt us. If we traded it for Scheilfe, a 30 year old, he would quickly turn into another immovable contract if we re-sign him. Also it just makes sense to get a younger player for other reasons as well. I know age isn't the be all end all, but preferable to not continue adding players over 30. I'm fine keeping the pick, would prefer to move the 2024 1st anyways, but if we trade it I wouldn't do it for someone like Schiefle who is old and we could get a player similar to in free agency. Use that pick to get someone unique who will bring something new to the table that we wouldn't get in free agent market.
