There's no way they would trade down like the OP in that post did. Smith is certainly a good prospect but he definitely a tier below Carlsson.

I don't think it's possible. The Jackets are desperate for a center and trading down to 5 creates the possibility that both Carlsson and Smith are gone by the time they're picking. There's also the guarantee at 3 that they'll be picking either Carlsson or Fantilli which is not something you pass on.

If they think Smith is better then they should just draft him. Personally I think there is a high chance both are gone by pick 5 Michkov falls. I also think Montreal should draft Reinbacher at #5

I hope you are wrong on the Reinbacher idea (although you may not be). I just really think that next year’s draft is deeper with defencemen and Montreal will obviously be in the draft lottery next year too.

Go after the high end offense this year and the defence next year.

Who knows though

montreal weakness is forward not defense so they take a swing at an elite forward for sure.. even if it has to be the russian....

Idk man, ask Ottawa how it's turned out for them. Reinbacher projects very similarly to Sanderson. If I were the Habs I would take him for sure

Sorry, but that horsepoop. They are both excellent prospects, but Smith is an electrifying offensive talent and a wizard with the puck who pairs well with Gaudreau. Carlson is a big, powerful two-way centre in the classic Swede mode. He's not a great skater, which is why no one is saying he's the second coming of Mats Sundin. He's a very good player who can be a foundational piece on an already good team. But in terms of lighting up the scoreboard, Smith is the much better option.

And if that was the type of player to compliment the pieces already in columbus, 100% Smith is the choice. But Columbus already has Kent Johnson and Jonny Gaudreau, small high-offense, high-IQ players. What they don’t have is the big two-way guy. I’ll accept it if Smith is who they pick, but I won’t be happy.

My fault. I was looking at the quote you had already included in your comment and hit "quote", but should have gone up to the original. I then cut the other original in, but forgot to fix the attribution part. Fixed now, I hope.
