Trading Up

Description
I think that Detroit has some interest in moving up this year to get one of the top 4 Centers in the draft. I have my eye on SJ as they are just entering a rebuild and will be looking to load up on players/picks. The issue is that I don't think they would be willing to move as far back as 9. I think they would be interested in sliding back to 6 because Michkov would likely still be available there. The issue is I think Arizona would love to land Michkov in this draft so to get them to move 6 Detroit would have to overpay. Arizona only has 1 2nd this year so I think they would be interested in adding another 2nd as well a 2024 1st to move back 3 spots. The following is a 3 team deal that hopefully benefits everyone involved.

Detroit: 4

SJ: 6, 17

Arizona: 9, BOS 2024 1st, 43

Detroit selects Smith or Carlsson at 4.

Laf and Yakupov are busts.
Wright and Slafkovsky were drafted last year? Calling them busts are absurd.

Anyways, Detroit needs to take swings?

Detroit is dying for topline talent. Easier to get bottom 9 guys/bottom 4 guys than it is top line players outside of the draft.
It's also easier to get those topline guys in the top 5 of the draft than it is later.

Are you saying slaf and Wright are busts? Lol. Before this season you could put Jack Hughes on that list.

That argument of "any player could be a bust" is how you end up trading for Ian Cole.

Still too early to call laf a bust. Before this season Hughes might have been in this conversation.

That's completely true. His situation also deserves an asterisk since NYR blows at developing.

Isn't that the truth. But when you are desperate as a GM you make silly moves.
Laf is a tough one. I think he needs better opportunity but also his skating need improvement.

Think he needs a new location, too.

Definitely not calling them busts. Just noting that "franchise guy" is thrown around like candy by the talking heads, and far more often than not it's an absurd designation.

Bedard is close to a guarantee, but the rest are complete wild cards. You just don't know.

We can add Patrick to that list btw...big time.

I think Anaheim should trade 2OA for someone like Berggren. Fantilli may never be good, but Berggren has shown he can become a good middle-6 guy!

LaF was supposed to be a franchise guy.
Yakupov was supposed to be a franchise guy.
Wright was supposed to be a franchise guy.
Slaf was supposed to be a franchise guy.

And that's just recently, the list goes on and on and on and on.

Strawman. How's McDavid doing? Matthews scored 60 goals in 21-22. Dahlin seems to be doing well. Patty Kane won 3 Cups. Jack Hughes is one of the best players in hockey. Sid Crosby turned out ok. So did that Ovechkin guy. Then there's Lecavalier, Joe Thornton, Eric Lindros. Kovalchuk. Tavares. Sundin, MacKinnon, Stamkos, Modano. Just stop.

lol that's not a strawman - try again. Most of those guys you named are 1OA, not 5 and over.

"I think Anaheim should trade 2OA for someone like Berggren. Fantilli may never be good, but Berggren has shown he can become a good middle-6 guy!" - that's a strawman.

I am simply saying it makes very little sense to trade up from 9 to 5 when most of those guys are so overhyped. If you're trading up from 20 to 5, sure, but not 9 when there will be a plenty good player available to us and we need more than just Will Smith to be competitive.

Stay pat, draft 3 times in the first 50, and move on.

I’d do 9, 17, and 2 of the 2nds for a top 4 pick.
Don’t know if Anaheim, Columbus, or San Jose would.
Don’t think Yzerman would.
