3-Team Trade - Is this fair value

Created by: ChromeHound
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2023
Published: Jun. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sorry if this is a bit messy, first time trying this out and attempting a 3-team trade. Details are below.

While I don't like the idea of getting rid of Demko, I wanted to play around with an idea that could (hopefully) work for all teams involved.

My proposal is a three team trade between the Canucks, the Penguins, and the Ducks.

To the Penguins:
-John Gibson
-Anthony Beauvilier

To the Ducks:
-Thatcher Demko
-Nils Hoglander
-Jeff Petry (1.25 mil retained by Van)
-Penguins 2024 2nd RD pick

To the Canucks:
-Mason McTavish
-14OA
-59OA
-First negotiation rights with Tristan Jarry

Penguins get a quality veteran goaltender who reportedly wants out of Anaheim and can help stabilize things for them in net. They also add Beauvillier who can be streaky, but can produce when given talented linemates (which Pittsburgh has). He's also only under contract for another year so they can flip him at the deadline if they don't intend to re-sign. They also manage to dump some cap with the Petry contract coming off the books.

The Ducks add a younger goalie in his prime who is on a good contract and can grow with their young team. They add a veteran D in Petry who may be a bit of a cap dump for the Penguins but could help stabilize Anaheim's back-end for a couple years while their young guys grow into their roles. They lose McTavish, but with Fantilli or Carlsson coming in, that's a postion of strength for them. Adding Hoglander also helps to provide another young, cost-effective middle 6 winger.

The Canucks lose their top goaltender but get a potential stop-gap while Silovs finishes his development. They also clear a bit of cap and get quality returns for their assets, allowing them to restock some positions of need in this draft, or make an additional move if needed.

You have very clearly taken leave of your senses if you think the Ducks are accepting that trade.

We don't need Demko, we have a very well laid out succession plan from Gibson to Dostal. Hoglander does not fit the minimum build requirements for Verbeek. The second and old as dirt Petey do not even begin to cover the difference.

You're asking us to give up McTavish AND Gibson to gain Demko and some window dressing. This trade NEVER happens. Anaheims problem is a lack of top 6 forwards and top 4 defensemen. This gives away a future star in McTavish to get what, exactly? A slightly younger goalie? Demko is no spring Chicken either.

You clearly get Gibsons value, as you get 14OA for him, so I can only assume you believe that Demko is the unholy love child of Dominik Hasek and Carey Price.

Quickly delete this and restart.

McTavish was a 3rd overall pick who's already in the NHL. And the 14th pick. For Beauvillier, Demko and Hoglander. Not even close. You wouldn't get McTavish alone for that.

Totally fair response and I appreciate the feedback. I'd read an article indicating Gibson may have asked to be traded to a contender next year, so wasn't sure if Dostal would be quite ready by that point. Gibson is a great goalie and definitely has value. Demko is also a very good goalie, and suffers a bit from the same thing Gibson has for the past few years (not having the strongest D-Corps in front of him) but as you've mentioned it doesn't sound like there's a solid fit between the two. Honestly the Canucks and Ducks seem to be in a similar spot (both needing some higher end middle-six talent and top 4 D) but I'd argue Anaheim is in a much better spot with stronger, younger talent and better draft picks for the foreseeable future.

I reckon the Ducks are much closer to building a long-term contender than the Canucks (sadly for me, but great for you guys).

I'll leave this up (despite it being made clear how bad a take it was haha) best way for others to learn from my mistake, and for me as well.

Again, appreciate the feedback from all posters. I'll try to keep a better eye out for fair-value on all sides moving forward.

All the best!

Going to be a hard pass for Anaheim

You’re crazy thinking we are trading Mason McTavish
