Making room for big signings

Created by: Caletti12
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2017
Published: Jun. 22, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cost-cutting moves with Vegas and ARI allow CGY to make a big play for Shattenkirk. The additions of Shattenkirk and Schlemko would give CGY one of the strongest bluelines in the league. Add Justin Williams to the right side to help Bennett and CGY has three capable scoring lines, and a 4th line made up of young up-and-comers instead of aging veterans.

Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Schlemko, David
Additional Details:
The return of Schlemko would solidify the 3rd pairing. He's a good puck-mover with a great contract and had top pairing numbers in terms of shot generation and suppression last season.
VGK
  1. Brouwer, Troy
  2. McDonald, Mason
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
CGY could also retain some of Brouwer's salary to make the deal more palatable. Retaining 1.5M would be the same cost as buying him out but would be spread over 3 years as opposed to 6.
2.
CGY
  1. 2017 1st round pick (MIN)
  2. 2017 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Arizona moves up in the 1st round from 23 to 16. They absorb Stajan's contract to help them reach the cap floor. With only one year remaining, Stajan's deal is easy for ARI to absorb.
ARI
  1. Stajan, Matt
  2. 2017 1st round pick (CGY)
  3. 2018 4th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Calgary offloads Stajan and gets their 3rd round pick back for this year.

I would say it's worth trying that Brouwer + 2nd + McDonald package for Colin Miller first. For Schlemko I would say a 3rd rounder or 4th would interest VGK. They have 19 contracts on the books that come off at the end of 2017-18 season. Brouwer would provide some continuity in the locker room.

Not sure Shattenkirk is a realistic option for CGY without a major overpay. He wants to be the top dog (or top pair at least) wherever he goes. You'd think he'd want to join a strong Top 3 like CGY has, but he's an East Coast guy too, and someone would pay him that price to be close to home.

The more I see it, the more I really like Williams on the 3rd line with Bennett. It's a safe bet to expect Bennett to improve drastically with non-Brouwer line mates. I'd also love to see: Tkachuk / Bennett / Williams. Relentless pressure line with a scoring touch.

Like the Arizona trade for both teams. But Brouwer, don't think Vegas has any interest and what's another 2nd pick to them, they have so many. I think 6.5m could be better spend than Shattenkirk.
