WHAT IF NYR were smarter with their drafts

Created by: jpigeon2000
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2023
Published: Jun. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I understand this is truly subjective and speculative but it's fun to dream

OVERVIEW: re-handling last 5 drafts where they had 1st round pick(s) - 2017, 2018 (3 picks), 2019, 2020 (2 picks), 2021. for the player I felt they should have drafted I looked at org depth and player performance going into that draft year. I'm not taking into consideration actual NHL stats compiled by these players.

TRADES
1) I'm not trading player X for player Y as a deal I think could occur. I am trading player X for player Y in order to put the player the Rangers should have drafted with that pick.
2) not trading any of the picks for player(s) or moves up/down in a draft year

FA SIGNINGS
based decisions on what was needed after the "re-draft".

I mean it's almost as if the last decade's success is in spite of a lot of awful managerial decisions over that time

Hindsight's 20/20. Lias and Krav were reaches for sure but Laf was consensus, drafting department isn't gonna be held responsible for the struggles of a top prospect when they picked the consensus guy.

To me it always seemed like Laf's problem is the development on the NHL level

Laf's development is fine, it's a consistency issue. I watched enough of the Rangers to see Laf do some special sh*t, stuff no Hurricane can do certainly. But he does it so infrequently. If he did it all the time, he's one of the best wingers in the NHL. It's purely consistency

This makes a lot more of the Rangers fans not wanting to trade him make a little more sense. Maybe the consistency problem might be solved by a new coach or a change in scenery

If I was a Rangers fan, I'd be perfectly fine with Lafreniere and he development. The Rangers rushed him to the NHL because he was a #1 pick but they also moved up from 12 OA to steal him. They had no business getting him in the first place.

In case you haven't spent much time in the south that's a very polite way to tell you to go F yourself. Just so you know.

I think Lafreniere (and to a lesser extent Kakko) was a victim of circumstances. The team he went to was more concerned with contending than they were with developing. Hard to do both at the same time unless you’re dealing with a McDavid level prospect.

I agree with Byfield over Lafreniere. Kravtsov should've been a trade-up for Tkachuk, with a subsequent trade for Miller. Necas would've been smart by trading down; it would've either been Norris or Thomas.

Living in the past is For Ranger and Maple leaf fans. Don't worry the rangers will win another Cup ... In 2048 they get one every 54 years weather they deserve it or not.
Boy do I miss the 1940 chants. By the way dog they beat Dallas in 20montreal was 21i understand you don't get back to back Cups idea as a ranger fan considering you'd have to go back to 1940 just to come up with 2 Cups I mean 54 years then at least 30 years between Cups
