It would be a catastrophe if neither of these guys are willing to sign extensions. Ottawa traded the 7th overall pick for Debrincat and now Debrincat is traded for rentals. That is horrible asset management when you are not even Playoff team.

That's quite funny... I don't think they'd be even top 5. I think that it makes them better but it doesn't rocket them up into the elite threshold of D-Corps

uhh.... Chabot has emerged himself as being a more than competent top pairing D. Sanderson was one of the best rookie D's last year (2nd to power). Chychrun is a more than capable defenceman. Zub is a top 4 juggernaut. Pesce is one of the best shutdown defencemen in the league. Brannstrom is a puck rushing, PP QB defenceman. How would this not be a top 5 defence?????

I still think that the Hurricanes, Lighting, Avalanche, Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars have better D-Cores even with the addition of Pesce. I mean even with those you guys don't have an elite defenseman like all of these teams do (Slavin, Hedman, Makar, Pietrangelo, and Heiskanen) and the depth is about the same. I mean the Hurricanes have one the best shutdown men in the league and a Future HOFer on their top line... that's hard to beat with what the Senators have. I think they'd be in the 6-10 range... very good but not elite

Not sure why the Canes even do that. DeBrincat had a bad year, doesn’t have a contract, doesn’t want to play for Ottawa, and still has the 9mil QO. Ottawa shouldn’t be getting a return investment on ADB, and there is no reason whatsoever for them to get more than what they paid.

Every Canes DeBrincat deal hinges on the extension. I just don’t think it’s realistic for him to be in Carolina.

you're right the Canes are def #1. Dallas probably is 2nd. But I still think Chychrun > Pietrangelo imho

I mean the Hurricanes have the cap space next to resign him and everybody else when they come up for extensions... I think if there is going to be a concern with DeBrincat it's the price to bring him in and how he fits with Sebastian, Svech, and all the others

I'd be ready to take the risk if I knew one of the 2 guys would re-sign

It is badly presented by the OP

Pesce would make Chabot much much better, that would be one of the best pairings in the league. He has needed a guy like that for years

Then you have Sanderson - Chychrun, which is a way above average 2nd pairing, first pairing on most teams

Brannstrom is LD, and has quite the chemistry with Zub. They'd be a way above average 3rd pairing

Chabot - Pesce
Sanderson - Chychrun
Brannstrom - Zub

But they would need a coaching change for sure because current coaching staff can't play 2-way hockey to save their lives

But on paper, who would have a better D squad?

What the heck is that post? Like the opposite of what a million other fans would say lol

Are you aware that your 2 guys are pending UFAs and that DeBrincat is RFA?

Chabot - Pesce would be a very good pairing but there's a few that I'd take over it including Burns-Slavin. I mean the hurricanes would still probably have the better d-core but I'd be close. I mean Slavin is a top 10 defenseman, Brent Burns is a future HOFer, Skjei's a very good offensive defenseman, Chatfields very solid defensive defenseman, and the two spots would probably be filled out by two guys I'm really high on Domenick Fensore, and Anttoni Honka

Burns is 38 y/o though... the steep decline is coming

Carolina, Dallas, Colarado and Boston would still have among the best D squads but Ottawa would be joining that group. Need to see what is going to happen but if they make serious management and coaching changes in Ottawa (I would after investing a billion lol), even without Pesce, that D-group will start turning heads.

Chabot vs Burns
Sanderson vs Slavin
Chychrun vs Skjei
Pesce vs Chatfield
Zub vs Coghlan
Brannstrom vs Honka
Kleven, JBD, Thomson, Guenette vs Fensore, ???

Canes would have an advantage in the top-2 guys but the rest would be Ottawa easily. Taking Pesce from the Canes to the Sens would change everything. And how long before Chabot + Sanderson become better than Burns + Slavin? Sanderson is going to be beast, I often call him Slavin 2.0

The Hurricanes also have an elite blue-chip defensive prospect waiting to come over from Russia

Nikishin

There's also Scott Morrow who I wanted the Sens to pick with their 39th OA pick. Can't say I don't like Ostapchuk pick but they could have probably get him with that 49th OA and never draft Ben Roger who is already a bust

Svech-Cat wing combo would be dynamic regardless who their center was.
