MTL tries to bring their young guys up to give them a shot, a contract slot is already taken by Monahan... on top of that, it 1.9 mill that MTL still has to pay off if Monahan doesn't play well.

He’s either going to be a top six winger or a 3C, it’s unlikely that he’s in the way of our younger players as things currently stand.

1.9 million is change from the Molson family’s couch cushions. This is one of the richest teams in the league. Even if he didn’t play a single game, nobody would care.

Ok great, what message are you trying to send to other FAs then? Get your bags packed as soon as you get here because we're going to trade you?

Monahan 100% knows this is the desired outcome of the deal when he signed it. He wants to play competitive hockey and earn his next (hopefully much bigger) contract in the league, this is just a platform to do that.

17 points in 25 games is worth more than $2 million. Good deal for Montreal.

If Monahan would’ve stayed healthy last season, he was on pace for roughly 56pts. That kind of production on the open market is easily worth $5mil+ AAV.

So if Monahan can keep up his play and hopefully stay healthy, this is more than a steal. Not to mention contending teams that are cap strapped could increase their offers to get him at 50% retention $1mil AAV.

Just thought about how Suzuki likes to play with another center on his wing, but how the management still want to give a shot at developping Dach as a centerman.

Monahan fits great in that plan.

Zero chance the team signs that deal without knowing he's 100% healthy right? RIGHT?

Bob Hartley said he texted him today and Monahan was about to jump on the ice to skate.

He'll be healthy to start the season, but will he remain healthy for the whole season? Who knows.

No GM would have signed him long term anyway, he's going to prove he can stay healthy this season and sign long term with a contender next summer.

He'll play 3C and have PP time with Suzuki and Caufield on their RW, just like he did last season.

It's more of a message to other FAs... Not Monahan

What message are you sending?

"We'll give you a chance to play top 6 minutes and show what you can do and then we'll work to send you somewhere you have a chance to win at the deadline. If things go well, you'll have the chance to prove to a team you're worth signing to a longer, more lucrative deal and perhaps win a Cup while you're at it."

If Monahan's playing top 6 minutes, there are more questions about this deal... If he isn't, then your statement is simply not true... Again, I'm not talking about Monahan, I'm talking about the other FAs who may decide Montreal or other team and pick that other team because they at least have a chance at not being moved at TDL

That sounds like a wonderful thing for those FA player's agents to discuss with a team signing them and push for a NTC or at least a NTC that lets them pick some teams they'd be willing to go to.

I don't follow the Habs so maybe he'll be a middle 6 forward. Anyhow I'm not sure what your point is, this type of deal gets signed several times literally every year. Plenty of players will sign deals just to stay in the league and get a chance to play for a winner. Sometimes they start on a team that probably won't be contending to begin the year.

If he stays healthy...

It's a steal
He's trade bait
He's gonna score 20+ goals

That's a pretty big 'IF'

Really just needs to stay healthy. He played great in the 25 games he actually was healthy for.

This good be a hell of a signing if he can stay healthy.

Good deal, not much performance bonuses is a good thing if KH is looking to trade him at the deadline, because the bonus will fall on the new team and it would diminish the trade assets that teams would give back

Monahan wants to be traded at the deadline. I'm not sure why you think other free agents would have a problem with a contractual arrangement that very much suits both player and team.

If you've played organized hockey (not meant to be an insult, just more of a scenario that you could understand where I'm coming from), and you had the option to sign with 2 teams: one team will use you to try and win for sure, that's why they are approaching you and one team may or may not use you or might send you off to another team... Which team would you rather sign with?

When Montreal is actively recruiting free agents for more traditional long-term contracts in a few years, I'm not sure why anybody would be concerned that a few years earlier the team gave a guy they took in as a cap dump an extra year to try a mutually beneficial arrangement. The team isn't trying to win now. In the future, they will be; nobody signs guys to long-term contracts just to trade them immediately.

Same 6 millions as last year prorated for the 25 games he played. The team can't afford to tie up cap on players who won't be able to show up. The only losing scenario for the team is that he'd play less than 20 games, which isn't excluded considering the severity of the injuries he suffered at the end of the season.

Why would he sign for so cheap when worse FAs have been signing for more?

I think from Monahan’s perspective, he’s already thinking about his next contract after this one. He’d rather sign with a team he knows for sure he’ll get PP1 time, and be able to rack up points and increase his value for his next deal, than sign with a contender July 1st, maybe get a slightly more $$$, but with no guarantee of his playing time.

Its really no money, but a bit like matt murray, he just cant stay healthy and any HOPE that he'll stay healthy and be your 3rd line center is laughable.

With the injuries MTL has had the past few years, its kind of a headache, the whole will he/wont he play that is a distraction they might not need, but at 2mil, its worth a shot.

Great signing.

Low Risk, High Reward. Monahan when healthy is a very good versatile top 9 forward. The problem is the healthy part, but Money is up against the cap (factoring in Price's LTIR) so there's no risk here. Worse case he plays 0 games and continues to be a good mentor for the young kids.
