What I would do

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Murray: I'm not sure on his status, but he gets bought out if he can't be on LTIR. If he can go on LTIR, then they can run a 22 man roster; promote whoever. I wouldn't bother to give up assets to trade given his fair buyout price.

WPG trade: They can choose the 2023 or 2024 1st. Perhaps TOR needs to add one of their 3rd rounders if necessary.

Top 6: get the young guys in there and see what they could do. If they falter, then feel free to dip into the 3rd line. But, TOR was playing very well with a more balanced lineup, so I'm leaning on that to start the year.

3rd line: Bunting and O'Reilly should cost between 3.5mil-4.5mil each. I went in the middle. Term can be plus or minus a few, whatever they would prefer.

4th line: LW is ZAR or Lucic or whoever at around that price. C is Kampf or Accari at around 1.5mil.

D: Rielly and Schenn are the first pair, I don't see it changing. Schenn can be between 3.5mil-4.5mil; I'm sure a bidding war will commence on the open market that will drive his price up a little. I can see BUF throwing a lot of money at him. He's really developed his game nicely the last few years and is a perfect D man to put with an offensive guy. Otherwise, I see Liligren, Timmons, and Gio moving in and out of the lineup. I'd like to see Brodie on the left side, but it's up to him how it goes.

G: Self-explanatory. It'd be nice for the franchise to finally get a rock back there. TOR may need to lose one of the "Big 4" to re-sign Helleboy, but it'd probably be worth it depending how the year goes.

He's a top 5 goalie in the League by many accounts, and they should at least make an effort to sign him long term; they'll have the money with some tough decisions. A solid goalie has been missing in TOR for a really long time... time to change that

Winnipeg is a good example of why having a great goalie but no defense doesn't work. Resigning Halleybuck is going to cost a huge amount. Which will mean the team can't afford either a good offence or a good defence. Goaltending just isn't an issue in TO.

Hellebuyck already said that he won't sign long term in Canada, Plus he said he won't accept a trade to any Canadian team. So not happening. He said States only.

He has no clauses that would prevent a trade. He can be traded anywhere today.

Whether it's Helleboy or not, they are likely losing one of the big 4 anyway, unless they keep trying to force having ELC goalies, which clearly isn't working... I think it's ignoring the problem to say they don't have a problem in net. He wants just north of 9million which isn't that bad, and he plays enough games where you don't need a high priced backup. Most good teams have around 10million wrapped in goaltending. TOR should join that squad if they want to turn it around

Winnipeg isn't retaining and trading Hellebuyck for such a poor offer.

It absolutely is terrible and why is goaltending the problem? They didn't score enough in the playoffs. Is a 9 million dollar goalie going to score an extra goal a game? No. Sounds to me like Jets fans are trying to manufacture a reason to screw over the leafs.

I can accept my offer is a little light depending how you rate these prospects (maybe it'd be better to do Robertson instead?) but can't wrap my head around no retaining? WPG are very likely losing PLD, Shief, and Helleboy... they are not competing next year. Why would retaining for one year matter?

Because the only piece Winnipeg would want is the 1st and you're not offering anything extra for retention. Some 27 YO deadweight and an expensive backup don't have as much value as you're thinking.

That’s a lot for a goalie that you have ZERO chance of signing. Murray would need to go the other way.

I guess in a very weird way you can say every loss in the NHL is due to a "lack of goals" (FLA lost 9-3 vs VGK in the last game... would you say that that is because of "lack of goals"?), but 3/4 losses to FLA were by one goal; the other was by 2. Two of them were in OT. So yes, I certainly think a bonafide #1 goalie would matter. Goalies win 1 goal games. The Leafs have been getting by with riding cheap goalies for a couple of years similarly to how CGY was, but Treliving finally decided to buckle down and get a real #1... I'm expecting him to do the same here to hopefully get some deep playoff runs in TOR, especially with all the high profile goalies on the market this off season, and TOR actually having cap space this time around.

I'm also a Rangers fan, so I don't understand the last sentence...

Damn, McMann is 27? Well, you got me. I thought he was some blue chip prospect the way I've seen people talk about him around here and elsewhere. That's my bad, I didn't really look into it. I'm not a big prospect/AHL guy, so I normally go by what I hear. My fault.

I have updated the trade to be with Robertson instead, which I think is a lot more fair. I'd also disagree about Samsonov; he was good as mostly a #1 for TOR this year and pretty good in the playoffs before his injury. I don't really think WPG will get a better goalie option in a trade. He's also pretty young to ride out the rebuild/retool, or can be flipped for assets otherwise. He's still under cost control for now

So what, a different goalie wins that series by shutting our Florida every game? The leafs didn't score more than 2 goals in any game that round. You honestly think the goalies the problem

Okay, I think the Jets would file that in the "only as a last resort" pile. Toronto and Winnipeg just aren't good trading partners.
