Saad is basically a cap dump at this point.

A cap dump is an obvious exaggeration but I'm not sure he's really worth much either. Kind of a Connor Garland situation. Good player, worth his salary, but not a lot of room for middle class wingers in a flat cap league.

That said if the Sens wanted a guy who could give you half of Debrincat for half the cost so you're not taking all futures back at a time when you want to try and be competitive you could do a lot worse than Brandon Saad. Feels like if they move Debrincat they're going to try and fill that 2LW spot somehow anyway.

I would do something like that because we need a middle-6 forward to replace DeBrincat

We get 2 late 1sts and a 3rd. We could use one of these 1st to get a decent forward on a good contract

The problem I have is I'd rather have a forward who is good defensively

He got 37 points this year, that's worth like $3.5 million.

For one, a $4.5 million player playing like a $3.5 million player =/= cap dump. He might be a cap *casualty* of a larger deal, but a cap dump is like...Nikita Zaitsev. Someone you have to pay to get rid of.

For two, the Athletic had his value at $4.4million last year anyway. A down year by counting stats, but still contributing more or less exactly what his AAV is.

For third, you know who else had a down year by his standards? Uhh...Alex Debrincat! What's a 50-70 point winger worth these days? A 3rd and a 2nd for Bjorkstrand? A 2nd and a 4th liner for Buchnevich? Don't suppose you'd be taking any of that for Debrincat though and rightfully so because you would be expecting your buyers to be reasonable and look beyond a down season when he was on a bad team, and take into account other recent years of higher performance and paying accordingly.

The Blues would be expecting the same if they were entertaining a Saad trade (though obviously, of course, not expecting the same caliber of return).

He plays both special teams and is a goal scorer. You don’t want him because you don’t understand the value those things bring fine. But he’s not a cap dump.

He scored 19 goals this year, I'd rather take my chances with Kubalik or Olofsson.

Good luck. I would probably lean to a guy who's been with pretty much only successful teams in pivotal roles even if his production is a bit lower. There's more aspects to hockey than putting up points. There's a reason the Sabres didn't make the playoffs, there's also a reason the Sens didn't make the playoffs. If you have to have your top guys matchup against other teams top guys, you probably aren't going to be that successful. Seems like the same merry-go-round of trying to advertise Barbashev or ROR or Acciari at the deadline which I don't think you're going to comprehend.

Bro, Saad scored one less even strength goal than Cat did last season, in 11 fewer games. And he scored exactly the same goals per 60 across all situations as Cat. Get a grip.

DeBrincat is a young 40 goal scorer who had one down season, Saad is an aging guy who may score 25 goals sometime in the future, or may not.

You're entirely missing the point. You wanted to simply throw Saad's goal total from last season up some sort of rock solid proof that he was really just a cap dump. I demonstrated that your logic of cherry picking one stat from a mildly down season is inherently flawed and quite unintentionally ironic.

Saad is at best a 50 point player though, I would not be surprised if he never hits 45 points again.

Just not worth it for Ottawa to trade for him. At best, he's barely worth his contract.
