2C trade options

Description
I think this is the biggest need for the Canes this offseason. This is just a list of potential trade targets and my thoughts on them. I mostly used daily faceoff's top 40 trade targets.

Do they trade for one of these guys? Someone else? UFA? Or does KK play there and we add a 3C or 4C?

Just interested to hear others thoughts. Thanks!

Trades
1.
CAR
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
  2. Scheifele, Mark
Additional Details:
PLD: too expensive, aint no way

Scheifele: A one year rental, but a lot of cap space for extensions next offseason. Maybe KK takes a huge step and can play 2C after that. A lot of what-ifs, but not terrible
WPG
2.
CAR
  1. Hayes, Kevin
  2. Laughton, Scott
Additional Details:
Hayes: Same goals, more assists than KK in less games. Maybe does better with Turbo & Necas? Cap hit would probably mean sacrificing someone next offseason bc we couldnt resign them

Laughton: Identical stats to KK in 4 less games, dont think hes a 2C but he'd be cheaper. Has good term left and smaller cap hit
PHI
3.
CAR
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Additional Details:
3 years left, but AAV is deceptive. Each year, in order, he'll make 7.5, 8.45, 8.5. Reportedly, Canes asked about him at the deadline, but probably didnt, and still dont, want to pay him all that
ARI
4.
CAR
  1. Kuznetsov, Evgeny
Additional Details:
Washed, def not worth 7.8, might not be worth 3.9. Trading within division could drive price up as well
WSH
5.
CAR
  1. Henrique, Adam
Additional Details:
Idk about this one. Health concerns, age concerns, one year left. But , ya never know

Other than PLD I’d be fine with KK playing at 2C over the rest and using the assets elsewhere. But I also wouldn’t really want to trade for PLD bc he won’t extend here and not worth what it’ll cost to acquire him.

Lindholm is another candidate if he comes with an extension.

Honestly KK is going to be a low end 2C who has great two way play and is really cheap so you can put some high end wingers with him and get more offense out of him that way. That’s my preference at this point.

I think Schmaltz would be a good pick up for Carolina, but he definitely shouldn't be penciled in as the 2c. It's nice that he can fill-in as a center in an emergency, but he really isn't suited to the center position, imo.

outside of PLD most of these guys seem like non starters for us.

Scheifele, no.
Hayes was moved to LW by torts, and RBA has a similar high level for centers
Laughton, is a winger
Schmaltz hasnt been a center on the center starved Yotes for a long time, i doubt he is one here.
Kuzy- no. overpaid, isnt a style match and we dont want his locker room issues.
Henrique is the 2nd best option. He would be an expensive rental and may not even be a 2C in production.

I actually feel like Scheifele would make sense for Carolina.

Interesting take to say that Kuzy might not be worth at $3.9m...

Last two seasons:
79 GP; 24 G; 54 A; 78 P
81 GP; 12 G; 43A; 55 P

And that was under a coach that directly clashed with his style of play (Lavy)

Not many centers with that production, speed and experience sitting at $3.9m lol

I think Caps keep him and see how he plays under new coaching staff - that would be my preference at least

Do you think Pono and/or Rees are league ready?

I was hoping the canes would get him at the deadline last year. The backloaded salary does make it a lot harder, but currently the yotes are 10 mil under the cap minimum. They can def retain some

Henrique has the great two way game that I think Carolina uses as their foundation throughout the lineup. While older, he is still fleet of foot. His biggest advantage is that he has great finishing, his GF is always above his xGF per Hockey Viz.

He's not a Patches level goal scorer, but he will make goals happen that often shouldn't, and he won't cost you goals while doing it.

Probably but in limited roles. Pono has middle 6 upside but Rees js probably bottom 6. At best Pono is a strong 3C, but probably not somebody I’d trust next year full time.

Rees could be if he gains about 5-8 pounds in the off-season. His game will not translate in the NHL being a smaller guy. He will take a lot of abuse with the way he plays.

Pono, it comes down to skating work. He needs to be a great skater to compliment his all around game in the league. Hopefully he works on that hard this off-season.

Kuzy will bounce back next season. Whether that’s thanks to Carbery or on another team. Howeva i am not sure the canes would be a good fit
