Without involving Knies that's pretty much the best the Leafs can come up with as far as futures go.

If the leafs are trading Murray they certainly aren’t retaining on him

Why would the Maple Leafs pay $2.3 million for Murray not to play for them when they could pay $687,500 for him not to play for them? Next season, the cap will be going up another $1 million if not more, so Toronto's maximum exposure is $1,687,500 instead of $2.3 million, plus the difference between buyout cash and actual cash.

i dont think the leafs want 2 mill dead cap next year when matthews and nylander extension kick in id rather pay him 2 mill this year to get it over with and not worry about it next year

But as I explained in my comment, which I hope you read, it's $1 million in dead cap, not $2 million, and the problem arises next summer only if the parlay of re-signing Matthews, re-signing Nylander, and re-signing Brodie comes in. Spending $2.3 million now to avoid a contingency that may not occur later is foolish asset management.

Yes, and as I said in Comment #9 and referred to in Comment #11, with the cap ceiling going up again by at least $1 million in 2024 (and probably more), that $2 million becomes an effective $1 million drag.
