If this is a cap dump, it's a pretty bad one...Murphy has a 3.85 million cap hit compared to Hjalmarsson's 4.1 million...savings of only 250k.

Agreed. And Murphy has 5 years left on his deal, while Hjalmarsson only has 2 years. Don't see why Chicago wanted Murphy

Hjalmarsson is one of the best defenders in the league.
Chicago must have something else in the works or be really high on Dauphin.

In a bubble, this trade makes little sense to me.

Any Chicagoans have a plausible explanation?

This trade for both teams doesnt make sense the Hawks lost a good D man and only saved 250K. Arizona lost a young D man. What ever happend to building a young core??

Make sense if Chicago goes for younger Guys with long term contracts.
A little more flexibility by rebuilding the team in further years.
But they lost VRD by expansion and not Kruger so Chicago is still looking for an answer to their cap problems.

This trade doesn't completely make sense for either team really. Hammer is a clear #2 on most teams in the league and has a very reasonable cap hit. But he is 30 and the Yotes should be sticking with the young guys. Hawks save no cap space.

My only explanation here is:
Hawks get younger on D with more contract stability for many years to come. They like Dauphin and possibly think he can replace Kruger's role. Kruger will be traded after July 1st.
Arizona is marking the end of their rebuild and want some veteran's with some winning pedigree to start mentoring their young guys as they build into true NHLers.

From a Hawks fan, Yotes win this trade. Expected the Hawks to get a bit more in return for a top 4 league shutdown defenseman on a great contract.

Phoenix going after their dream shopping list. I don't know the prospects involved, but Chicago gets what they want in some cap relief.

I had to really look at this/think about it... Chicago I think wins this, Murphy is a right handed shot D-man to replace the guy they lost to Vegas... He has scored 6 goals before, under contract for a nice amt of time to secure their big 3 D of Keith/Seabrook... Getting a forward who might have some upside is a nice bonus who might fill a role at NHL level at some point too... I remember heard might trade Oduya then Hammer not long before things like this happen. Murphy isn't well known to most while many are emotional about Hammer for one reason or another. Reality is much like with Saad if they want Hammer back they will get him for less than it cost smile. Going to be hard to get past Chicago on way to the Cup if a Western team this year. They are making bold moves if nothing else even if its upsetting a few who are emotionally attached to certain players smile.

My guess is they couldn't sign Hjammer after the two years and they instead have Murphy for an additional three years
