We thought it was crazy 2 years ago when Calgary was talking about trying to re-sign him at 4-5 mil which is why we traded him to Dallas.
There's no denying he's a decent defense man, but at this point in his career he's not a 4mil per year guy.
Oilers are backing themselves into a cap corner still having to sign McDavid and Leon to huge deals.
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Kris Russel fan, but I just can't see how this is a good deal.

He's a pretty decent d-man, but I wouldn't give him THAT much money, especially for four years.

Wow. Bad move. Give Russell 4 mil but trade Eberle for a draft bust. What are they doing.. I guess I shouldn't day busy but definitely not living up to expectations and already turning 24.

I'm guessing Chiarelli feels he has so few worries that he just wants to go with the Devil he knows, change nothing, and get out of Edmonton for the summer asap

Tack on McDavid & Draisaitl's forthcoming contracts and that will be $28M for those 3 players.

Russell isn't worth 4M a year, guys like Muzzin, Martinez at least can score 10ish goals for their cap hits... You need D-men capable of scoring 10 ore more goals even if they don't every year. Not many if any forwards will score more than 40-50 goals in todays game... Not going to see a Selanne score 76 goals or more so need to get goals from Defense to compensate for the rising scoring needing 3-5 goals to win a game. Your first pair D should get like 30-40 goals or at every least 20-30. Team like Kings wont be making Post Season when Drew Doughty can score 12-15 but his 1st round bust pair partner of Forbort would be lucky to hit 5 in a season . Burns gets nearly 30 on his own but he don't have a guy who can score 10 or more on left side to get Sharks over hump . Guys like King Karl might wrack p a lot of points but if they playing with Methot who has like 12 points all assists entire season it wont win anything. Maybe if Oilers had a D-man who could jack in 10 or more goals instead of Russell they would have got to SCF . There is somebody on the team who is supposed to block shots, he is called the Goalie . Why not just sign Ludwig along with that other guy from Dallas Stars who would block all those shots wearing like Lacrosse shin guards or some crap like that . Maybe 2 or 3M for this guy but he isn't worth 4M for scoring like 1 goal a year lately. Least I think he had one season he scored 7 though don't seem that will happen again if couldn't put up offense on a team like Edmonton .
