Competitively selling

Created by: mvp13
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2023
Published: Jun. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Top 9 can be mixed and matched to an extent, but I think this makes sense. Reinhart can do faceoffs, so he helps Casey out.

Hopefully any of these expiry's choose to stay. Sucks this may be a yearly thing, but the best trades I could think of were all on expiring deals for both sides...
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
  2. 2025 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
1st round pick is hopefully an earlier one gained from a Swayman/Ullmark trade, or can be swapped with a 2nd/3rd combined with an NHL ready prospect. CGY pray to the hockey gods that Grizzlick re-signs. Not much choice.
BOS
  1. Lindholm, Elias ($2,425,000 retained)
Additional Details:
With the Hall trade, BOS open themselves up to take on a real centerman. CGY retain to give further cap space.
2.
BUF
  1. Backlund, Mikael ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
With Tage and Cozens taking over the 1C and 2C, BUF is in need of a defensive, penalty killing centerman exactly like Backlund. So... they get Backlund. CGY retains in case BUF wants to make bigger splashes and to make it a one for one trade. More unimportant pieces can be added on either side if necessary, but I think this is really close to being a 1 for 1 deal.
3.
FLA
  1. Hanifin, Noah
Additional Details:
FLA who are pretty solid on F get some sorely needed D help, as well as some cap relief. I think this is also a one for one, but perhaps some minor pieces are inserted to round it out if necessary.
4.
CGY
  1. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
STL
  1. Toffoli, Tyler
  2. Vladar, Daniel
Additional Details:
Sorry to be anti-climatic, but these two simply go wherever for whatever the best non-roster offer is. There are no other prime roster spots to be filled out, so just collect some picks. Either can be included in previous trades for more, or two separate trades, etc. Minor details.

Blues don't need more wingers and we already have our goalie tandem for next year

I wish BOS has any more picks to give. I was hoping they'd get a 2023 1st if they trade a goalie, and that'd go to CGY. But, down to the wire here. I think Lindholm to BOS makes sense, just trying to find the right combo of roster players

I really just picked a team that probably would want to compete next year, and had a lot of draft picks. But, to play devil's advocate... you are currently projected to have Kasperi Kapanen and Samuel L. Blais as your middle 6 wingers if Buch stays as a centerman. Joel HallOfFamer, a dude with 8 NHL games experience and over a 3 GAA is your backup. To say you couldn't benefit from upgrades in these positions is pretty funny. But really, I just picked a team that I thought could be in the playoff hunt that had some spare picks. They could go anywhere

That BUF trade is pretty bad. Not fair value at all for BUF.

I feel like BUF are going to go for a big free agent winger (Kane, etc) that'll push Middlestadt to the 3rd line. Backlund is just immensely better at playing a 3rd line game than Casey. BUF could really benefit from having a defensive minded center on their team with all their youthful skill. All good teams that go deep have them. Backlund also matches or exceeds the point output of Casey in all their years (Casey had 3 more points last year, Backlund blows him out of the water every other year). He's 34... plenty of years left. It'll be more money to re-sign Casey than it will be to re-sign Backlund. Trust me, I'd rather have Backlund in CGY, but the dude wants to leave, so what are you gonna do? Every team needs a Backlund.

FLA's biggest problem last year was having no LD... Marc Staal was a 2LD for cripe's sake. That just can't happen; he was barely one during his heyday. They are so flush with offensive talent that Reinhart was demoted to the 3rd line. Hanifin plays 1st pairing minutes and is solid defensively; since Forsling is already married to Ekbad he can become Montour's new fling and let him do his thing. They play completely different positions, styles, etc, so it's really hard to say one is better than the other... but, a team's needs are obviously paramount when looking at trades. With Knight coming back to the team, FLA are gonna be in a cap crunch and are gonna lose a winger most likely in order to get D help, which is really important. I think it's a pretty nice swap, but CGY can certainly add something if absolutely necessary. I originally was going to go with Duclair, but thought Reinhart would be more baitable... they are both expiring and Reinhart is arguably going to cost more than Duclair, so FLA chooses to keep the Duke.

Guys don’t have “plenty of years left” At 34. Think the point being CM is on the rise and Backlund is on the descent. Wouldn’t surprise me if he retired after this last year on his deal.

Would rather do that for Hanafin (Lindholm should cost more), or swap 1st w a prospect or 2
