Confused about Newhook

Created by: jonh514

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2023
Published: Jun. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So I've been looking into Newhook and I have to admit I'm confused. They can't play all these forwards. Here are some ideas that make sense:

1) Sending Slafkovsky to Laval (I hope not, but this was my first thought)
2) Someone is injured that we don't know about
3) We are trading Dvorak
4) We are trading RHP
5) We are trading Anderson

Even if we:

bury Pitlick
bury Wideman
bury/buyout Hoffman
don't sign/trade Ylonen
don't sign/trade Gurianov

We STILL have too many forwards

I have no idea what's cooking, but right now I cannot make sense of this lineup

You have to love this for Montreal. They paid more for a vastly inferior player than their fans were willing to give up for PLD. They got what they were willing to pay for.

Gotta let Hughes cook

"The Canadiens are working on more deals, from what I’ve been hearing, as well as the possibility of moving down from 5th overall."

It doesn’t make sense right now … of course, we are the 27th of June … training camp isn’t tomorrow, Kent will make other trades

I think Colorado will get ripped off when the smoke clears. Picks 31 and 37 aren’t great in any draft regardless of how deep it is.

Hey, there's no need to troll. I'm sure there's a plan. This is an accelerated rebuild approach and they got a 22 year old 16 OA pick from 2019 who they will be able to sign on a value deal like they did Dach.

They must believe he can be a 50+ pts guy, because they paid a lot for him. People made similar comments about Dach, but after his 1st year in town we're all happy about the move.

I AM confused about what the roster will be... we just have SO MANY forwards.

They paid two picks that aren’t likely to add up to a player with Newhook’s potential, which is 2C.

i think they got decent return for a player they didnt want to resign. They can either flip those picks for someone specific or draft them and have more assets to deal at the deadline for another push.

Nah, if PLD gets more than $8M and Winnipeg gets Vilardi and Kupari, every Habs fan will be ok with it, laughing at LA. You should be happy for your team now instead of going and dumping on the younger player traded.

Armia is obviously the buyout candidate. There's 100% more movement happening in the next 24 hours.

100% Hughes made the smart play and didnt get into a bidding war for a player that isnt worth what Kings were willing to pay.

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Slafkovsky- Monahan - Anderson
Newhook - Dvorak - Gallagher
RHP - Evans - Ylonen

1 of Hoffman / Armia out the door.

From a COL fan, Newhook will be solid for you if he's given stability of position and the guys on his line. For whatever reason, it was clear he wasn't gelling with Bednar, so it's a fresh start that he's been open to. I'm guessing COL uses the picks for trades as neither is of great value to them as they're looking to win now.

You're right about "too many forwards". But Habs have too many "iffy value forwards", virtually untradable.

That's not trolling. I'm just pointing out how badly Montreal fans overvalue their players.

Aside from that though, Montreal needs anther top 6 center, Dach hasn't been convincing so they are likely looking at other options and hoping it works out.

Yup. I'm just pointing out that it is more than fans were willing to give up for a superior player, so it seems a little steep.

Newhook also isn't a 2C, which is why Colorado traded him. He may get there, but he's got a long way to go.

I'm definitely happy that it appears PLD isn't going to Montreal. They just didn't have appealing pieces for a deal with Winnipeg.

I like Newhook, I just thought that it is a pretty steep price.

Ok even if that’s the case statistically the 31st and 37th picks don’t result in that level of player very often.

The fact that they went after another FWD IMHO means they plan on moving out at the very least 2 vet FWDs. Hoffman and Dvorak are my best guesses. Also IMHO 100% Gurianov in not coming back. So that is 3 right there gone. Armia and Gally are long shots to be bought out. Every other FWD not named is here to stay unless positive value trade is offered. (Mainly talking Anderson here)

I think it's more about having options in case of injury. I think they are actually more convinced about Dach at center than Suzuki,

I think we'll only know at the end of next season who won this trade. If Newhook puts up 20 goals and 45pts the Habs are laughing.

I like that analysis. I think it's more likely that one of those picks would have been a decent player (last year they got Mesar and Beck around those spots if you adjust for the strength of the draft. They probably were mostly concerned about accelerating things a bit.
