Description
This is per Frank Seravalli this morning. Said pens looking to move Petry and believe the landing spot would be SJ (Interesting as i figured they'd be on his NTC list) but also that the return coming back would possibly be Kahkonen. Didn't have a great year in SJ but only 26 and in fairness SJ was terrible last year.

If this is the case that tells me that DeSmith is going out the door somewhere and Kahkonen becomes the new backup?

would net the penguins $3.5M in cap space. Would imagine there may be a pick involved.

Thoughts?

it'd cost far too much and the salary would need to be eaten by two teams IMO. He's 33 and basically Letang, I get he won the Norris but just probably costs way too much. I'd take Barabanov though, one year left at $2.5M or Lebanc

That would be a bit of a scary move as the market for UFA right handed defenseman is pretty terrible imo. I would assume it means another trade would already be in the works for Petry's replacement - but not sure who that might be.

Connor Clifton may be ready to spread his wings in a top-four role.

This was my thought as well. Could also be a trade.

If they trade for a really good LHD to play alongside him, someone like Hanifin - then I could see it. But if he's going to be playing with like POJ or Smith - it's a bad move imo. Clifton is a clear downgrade from Petry.

Good. Fine player but awful contract. This would be a good move from Dubas.

Get Carson Soucy, play him with Letang, then Pettersson and Smith 2nd pair wouldn't be bad at all. I'd be fine too picking up someone like Caleb Jones or Oliver Eckman Larrson for the 3rd pair. Regardless though better to move on from Petry, brutal contract.

Soucy should definitely be looked at.

Can't say I would be too comfortable with a guy who played in the AHL last year all of a sudden playing 20+ minutes a night on his off side though. Plus we know the Pens really don't like same shooting d pairs.

Is Petry old? Yes. Is he overpaid? Yes. But he still had a good season - it's not like he sucked or costed the team. If they can move him and use the money to build a better defense I'm all for it - the RHD options are pretty bad though.

Soucy is good, but at best a second pairing LHD. Don't think he would do well under the first pairing spotlight.

I can see the concern there, I just feel like his playing style would mesh well with Letang.

He wasn't awful. Decent player, but brutal contract. He was fine but at a price of 6 mil and our second highest paid player behind Crosby is really bad. Team just needs more speed on all levels and that was often Petry's biggest weakness. He played well against slower teams, but got exposed pretty bad against the faster teams.

Those games against Montreal (his former team) were brutal.

Pitt could always move Rutta to the right side and either play smith and POJ or get a LH defenseman to play.

It's not a good contract - I agree. Maybe like 1-1.5mil overpaid.

Did he though? And if we just sign everyone for speed then we'll be here in October complaining that we're not physical enough. Petry hit at a 255 hit pace. He brings that instead of skating like Karlsson. If they can get rid of him and build a better defense that's fine with me - but Smith as a Petry replacement would worry me.

So you'd be fine with

Soucy/Letang
Pettersson/Smith
POJ/Rutta?

I'm not 100% in the boat of let's just build the team to be fast. But it definitely needs to be faster, a lot faster than what it was. We need to have a fast team also with a little bit of grit. Petry while he hit a lot wasn't super impactful when it came to defending our net front. That's why he was brought in according to Hextall, and he did a pretty bad job in that regard. So did our whole defense for that matter. So ideally we replace Petry with someone who is a physical player that can also defend well and prevent players from being wide open in front of goal. It's tough to pinpoint because this team has a lot of needs. It's not really just we need speed or physicality. We need a lot of different things, but I think Petry at 6 mil is just not the answer.

Yeah but there's no better options in free agency. Or in house

I'm very high on Ty Smith. I was impressed with him when he was in lineup and would like to see him get time. I think Soucy is a good, steady defenseman. Scott Mayfield would bring some physicality. Shane Gostisbehere is a good puck mover. I'd take any of them over Petry at 6 mil.

I like Smith and want him to play as well - but like 3rd pair and/or his correct side. He looked good in his brief stint last year. He basically only played in the offensive zone though.

I guess it depends what you can get those guys for - and what you do with the extra cap. Petry is still better than all of those guys straight up imo - but has a bad contract. Two of them are also lefties. Like I said - if you can use the cap savings to build a better lineup I have no issues. I was just saying I assume if they dump Petry it means another trade is in the works. Whether for a direct Petry replacement or maybe a very good LHD that would balance out the 2nd pair.

I think ideally we can trade Rutta too. Another player that is alright but contract is too expensive

Fully agree - such an unnecessary signing haha. Probably have to pay slightly to dump him though.
