Bottom 6 still needs a ton of work. Love the Graves signing though. I'm assuming one or both of Petry and Granlund will be traded. Rutta needs to be traded as well.

Jarry contract is horrific, but also I don't think Dubas had much of a choice. Literally every other goalie was gone. This is 100% not ideal at all, but I would still rather Jarry at 5 mil then having to trade a 1st for another goalie.

Graves and Acciari are good fits. I assume Nieto is as well. You will really like Acciari.

That is a STEEEEP contract for Jarry though. He must have heard really good things about Jarry.

I think they would have been better off getting someone much cheaper, for shorter.

Jarry contract is one of the worst in the league for any goalie. It makes Jack Campbell’s look smart.

All the guys he added were good additions at reasonable prices, maybe it's a bit much for Jarry. He's not done yet so way too early to say bad cap management.

Besides the Jarry contract, Dubas as got great value out of Graves and Acciari. Jarry was a panic signing is my guess as no other goalie is there and my guess is Dubas didn't want to spend assets for a Goaltender

Nailed it. I mean, what were the better options really? Trading valuable assets for a goalie of the SAME CALIBER or trading a haul for Hellebuyck/Gibson which just isn’t in the game plan for the future of the team. I don’t like the contract but I don’t hate it. I think Dubas is getting way too much scrutiny on this move, I don’t think there were much better options he could’ve went with…

You trade for an average goalie, you don’t panic and sign an average goalie to a bad deal. We are in Edmonton like cap issues now without the upside their roster has.

It's really not a horrible contract, 1mil more than I would of payed but Jarry as proved he has potential, he just need to stay Healthy.

Jarry has been much more consistent and reliable than Campbell. Goalie is one of the most cerebral and difficult positions in sports, giving a goalie some stability and a respectful payday can give them peace of mind and inspire confidence. A happy goalie tends to be a solid goalie. Shoring up the defense helps take some pressure off him too. PIT has too many aging players with clauses. They HAVE TO win now. It's the only option. There is definitely more work to be done, but I wouldn't be so brash with your judgement just yet. Also, the cap is going up significantly after this year and beyond. They'll be fine.

Jarry is an average goalie and nothing more. Campbell is the same. Neither is worth that contract.

You have no one to re-sign except Guentzel, Joseph, Nylander and a back up+depth next year.

Trade for an average goalie and that could be the unravelling of a season's work. Might as well go with the guy who is familiar with the team and it's systems.

Agreed. I think the defense in front of Jarry was way way more important to correct than the goaltending itself. I mean Jarry was bad last year, but the D was arguably even worse. Not much he can do with guys wide open in front of him. Graves signing is good and will help a ton. Karlsson if we get him will help the transition game significantly. If we can do that plus rebuild 3rd line I'm feeling good.

I think you are overreacting.

Jarry contract is bad but there weren't any other options on the market.

The other deals are great.

Think of it this way. I assume Dubas rather sacrifice cap space in 4/5 years from now than trade assets.

He knows he has 2/3 years to win then 2/3 years to retool then build the team back up. The bad years of this deal are when he is planning on retooling, he rather lose that cap space than give up assets that could be key pieces in 6+ years from now.

He's the best UFA goalie available. Sometimes you have to play the hand your dealt.

I would've liked less AAV as well - but it's not brutal for a top 8-10 goalie

It's not great but definitely wouldn't go as far as horrific. It makes him the 12th highest paid goalie - that's fair - and like you said, he didn't have any options.

And even the 3rd line as of RN I am ok with, Give guys like Nylander, Puustinen and Sam Poulin a shot, Mix and match them with some vets and it could work out well

I'd also add that I feel at the very least Petry will be moved out. DeSmith is probably gone as well that's another $8M in cap space.

Wouldn't be surprised if Dubas is trying to do something like Petry, DeSmith, Rutta for Karlsson.

If he takes on the full cap hit he can likely try to sell it as an easier move for San Jose to flip those assets over the next 1-2 years without needing to retain on Karlsson for 4 than to try and do a complex cap retention deal with karlson.

You trade for Vejmelka and you save millions to get the same thing you’ll get from the average goalie you overpaid. It is awful cap management.

Eh, if he manages to move Granlund, there's your cap space for this year. All will be well.
