Cap relief for the Oilers

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2023
Published: Jul. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this scenario the Habs send their best goalie on an incredibly team friendly deal to Edmonton, bring back a serviceable tandem for Allen and get some assets back.

I buried Hoffman and bought out Armia because I just can't watch them play anymore.

I think, with the limited number of contracts that the Habs can have, plus our depth on LD, Broberg isn’t needed in this seal. He could be replaced with a draft pick.

If we have the cap space, why buyout Armia? I’d keep him on the roster or send him to Laval.

My preference would be to get him off the books sooner, not prolong the issue. In the 3rd and 4th year of his buyout, I’d like to think we’ll be competitive and want to use that cap space efficiently.

And to follow up… do the Habs want Campbell on the roster in 4 yrs if they think they’re going to compete by then?

I know what you mean about Armia, but there is always a bit of a push and pull. If we play him, there is less room for Ylonen and some callups like Roy or Heineman and developing those players might be more valuable than the cost of a Hoffman or Armia buyout.

I am also concerned that Hoffman or Armia will resent being sent down. It's my sincere hope that the Habs can figure out a mutual termination with Armia that will let him go play in Europe and a Hoffman 50% trade, but based on our development needs, I would prefer to force the issue rather than retain them.

Campbell isn't a bad goalie in the same way Allen isn't a bad goalie. I think Campbell is the backup to a Fowler or Dobes in 4 years.

Was thinking about your point, and maybe the Habs drop Broberg for Lavoie and like a 5th?

Prettty bad trade for MTL. Monty is worth a decent bit, and Campball costs a lot to dump

I would argue that Monty and his 1M contract, has peaked in value. Once he signs a 4 year deal his value will start going downhill. Still a good goalie, but the cap flexibility, in this last cap strapped year, makes him extra valuable

I'd say as of now, he is worth a 1st of some sort. IMO Campbell costs 2 firsts to dump. I think MTL is shooting themselves in the foot here. I also wouldn't be surprised if Monty signs 4 years 3 mil AAV, which would keep his value quite high

I hear you. I am quite sure the Habs are not trading Monty. This was just a bit of fun.

I'd look into trading Allen though, not even sure he is better than Primeau anymore

I think they tried, but teams preferred goalies on the market. Allen is sticking around and Poehling probably gets picked up on waivers, hence why the Habs drafted 3 goalies.

The buyout window for the Habs is now closed as they have no arbitration eligible cases this offseason. Newhook doesnt have the eligibility.

Oilers sending a 1st and Broberg would probably be the price to move the Campbell contract, alone.

If Mtl would have threatened to offer sheet Bouchard, they would have had the necessary leverage (Oilers wont have the cap to match without more moves) to get the Oilers to trade Campbell at a massive loss or else face the buyout with the buyout window open 3 days after the Ryan McLeod potential arbitration hearing or settlement.

Habs don't need a buyout on Armia, but there is a nother window before the season.

Its closed. They needed an arbitration case. They dont have it.

"Buyouts can start on the later of June 15 or 48 hours after the Playoffs end, and the buyout period ends June 30 at 5pm Eastern.

Teams may receive an additional Buyout window. If a team has a player go to arbitration and it is either settled or awarded, the team receives a new 48 hour buyout window beginning 3 days after the arbitration settlement or award. "

Yeah let's forget the buyout.
I don't like Campbell but I see where you're coming from on this trade.
If Allen's extension was a Bergevin signing a trade that would make more sense is to send Allen the other way 50% retained so you retain the younger goalie here that showed promised things over the past year, as it's a Hughes contract I don't think he trades him. Also Broberg makes absolutely 0 sense for Montreal to grab, he's the same age as most of our young defenders and doesn't offer something others others don't so he just adds to the logjam. We should target Bourgault or Lavoie as our wings are about to get a major change up in the 2023/24 offseason, guys like Hoffman, Monahan (If he stays healthy he'll go UFA and try to high the bank one last time), likely Dvorak (Trade that would bring Newhook back to center a 3rd line), likely Armia (Trade or buyout) and Pitlick will be on the move. That'd give up to 5 openings down the wings so another young RW wouldn't hurt this team.
Allen 50%, Norlinder for Campbell, 24 1st, Lavoie/Bourgault, 24 or 26 2nd who says no? Norlinder is expandable at this point and we need to shed a contract if we take an extra one in.
