That's his QO and allows him to go straight to UFA next season

He has arbitration rights though. The leafs qualified him, sure, but it doesn’t mean he has to accept. He could easily not accept the QO and elect to go to arbitration, where he’d win a fair market value contract much greater than 1.8mil

He takes the deal to play on a top team and hit free agency when the cap jumps up

He already took a near league min. deal last year to play with a “top team” to build up his value. Why would he continue to take undervalued deals for multiple consecutive years lmao.

Retention only comes with bad contracts, or if a player wants to go to one team, and one team only, and they have cap constraints. This is only to benefit the Leafs when the Jets can easily trade Heinola to anyone else without the need to retain; if they trade him at all.

This isn't true whatsoever, learn some trade history before stating things as facts when they're untrue

He's an RFA and the cap will be going up next year when he will be a UFA if he signs a one year deal.
