Next Season Assuming We are One and Done Or Miss The Playoffs Again

Created by: edeangel84
Team: 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2023
Published: Jul. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It’s June 2024 and we’ve either been knocked out in the 1st round yet again or missed the playoffs for 2 years in a row. At this point in time the team must avoid delaying the rebuild. You can still have a similar team for 24-25 while also acquiring futures.

Order of business:

1 Extend 87 at 8.7x2yrs (Give him a M-NTC in the last year in case he requests a deadline trade to a contender). We should do everything possible to give Sid what he wants. He is the 2nd best player in franchise history and one of the best players ever.

2 Assuming he has another strong season, trade Marcus Pettersson. He could fetch a later 1st to the right team.

3 Resign Nylander and Puustinen unless they show absolutely nothing this season. If there’s any promise in them extend them.

4 Look to move Petry without having to dump him. Retain around 50% and see if you can get a 3rd.

5 Assuming Petry can be moved, target a bad contract and try to get a 1st. I chose Gudbranson but CBJ won’t be ready to contend for probably 2 more seasons, so target their 2026 1st when we will be very bad and they should be picking in the 20s.

6 I resigned Murray on the cheap. Might as well reunite part of the old gang.

2024 draft Way Too Early Look:

I am assuming we are picking between 13-19. I’m assuming STL pick is 21-25.

This is a Dman draft class. This is a good chance to get that elusive RHD for the top pair to replace Tanger.

Options for our draft range should be:

OHL RHD Prospects: (We Know Dubas loves OHL players)

Henry Mews- Ottawa 67’s
Anthony Cristoforo- Windsor Spitfires
Zayne Parekh- Saginaw Spirit

OHL LHD:

Sam Dickinson- London Knights
Matthew Virgilio- Soo Greyhounds (where Dubas got his start)

If we miss the playoffs or lose in first round then I agree. At that point it is time. One year we can blame it on Hextall, but if it happens a second year then it's time to rebuild. I think once Dubas decides to rebuild he will be very aggressive though. Trade everyone with value minute the core (unless they want to be traded).

So listen, you hate me and I feel the same way.

I am not saying this is the obvious thing to do, but like I try to say in others… do you actually think Crosby resigns the following year when we are purposefully rebuilding?

He would leave, 100%.

If you are good with Crosby leaving then ok, we will never agree on a team built here.

Sid campaigned for the resigning of Geno and Tanger. Sid will not leave them after working to get them to resign. I think Jake probably signs an extension this summer, so it’s unlikely he is traded. Therefore all we can do is try to move whatever few assets we have.

Jackets decline they aren’t desperate to move cap. They can play gudbranson on the third pair this year. If he still sucks they can buy him out or dump him for cheaper

I think the best move with Guentzel is to wait until the season or around the TDL to decide what to do. If we are firmly in a playoff position then I am fine giving an extension. If were borderline it would depend on the price. And if were out of a playoff spot then I don't think it would make much sense for either party.

And I agree on Sid. The only way I see him wanting to leave though is if Malkin and Letang also decide they want to leave. Eventually this question will come up though at some point whether next summer or later on.

I should say the only reason I chose CBJ is I think they’ll be a front runner to sign Hellebuyck.

And it won’t be next summer, it’s more likely a 25-26 or 26-27 question.

I think about a year after they start rebuild so yeah. Depending on how they do this year probably right

Definitely could see Columbus looking to move the Grubrandson deal next summer, buy neither the deal nor their cap will be bad enough to warrant giving up a 1st to dump it. Would be incredibly foolish for them to do so.

I told another Jackets fan the only reason I chose that trade is I think you’ll be a strong contender to sign Hellebuyck.

So they're paying a 1st to dump Grubrandson and then what else to dump Elvis? Cause no way are they gonna have 15 mil in cap in net. The prospect pool is incredibly strong, but you're looking at moving multiple 1s just to get rid of bad contacts then.

You could pay them both for a season and then buyout Elvis in 25-26. I looked at this from your side as well.

Yeah, I mean it's not a particularly bad buyout. I'd just be a bit hesitant to pay Hellebuyck a huge long term deal, but considering the dead cap from Elvis and paying that much to dump Grubrandson it's really hard to stomach.

Should add, the positive is that by the time this would happen you've had a year of Elvis on the new system, new D, new everything, so if you're in the position looking for a goalie, it's been determined that Elvis is a dud and you need to move on.

I went with a 2026 1st simply because that should not be a lottery pick for you. 2024 and probably 2025 will still be lottery picks.
