COL trade is interesting but due to the fact they can’t afford to resign Nylander, I believe this is a no go.

IF COL were to trade Toews, I’d assume it would be based around a young top 6F under team control with a cap friendly contract

My thoughts are they’re both rentals.

Got it. Who knows, might work. Not sure COL likes the idea of a rental. Maybe there is a 3way deal to be had here where a third team takes in Nylander and COL gets a young top 6F with term and cap friendly deal in return

Why is Colorado the team adding to the Toews-Nylander trade?

Toews finished 14th in Norris voting this year, 8th the year prior, and 11th his first season in Colorado. He makes $4.1M this season. In Toronto, he becomes a #1 defenseman instantly.

I like Nylander quite a bit, but top pairing defensemen have more value than top 6 scoring wingers. Add to the equation that this results in the Avs taking on an additional $2M in salary and this just doesn’t make sense for Colorado.

We're at the point in our window where we could consider something like this. It all comes back to landeskog......if they think he's got a chance to return, they don't do a move like this. If they think he's done.......this might be on the table.

Also, OP, this is one of the most realistic looking Colorado trades i've seen. Nice job.

I think the Hawks would make this trade. if I was the Leafs I would wait until part way through the season to see if Raddysh can repeat or improve on last seasons performance to make sure it wasn’t an anomaly.

Avs decline because (1) they can fill a gap at wing a lot easier than at D, and (2) there is zero chance they can keep Nylander long term, whereas I think they have every intention of re-signing Toews.

Strongly disagree with you on this. Toews has more value than Nylander as a rental. Trade doesn’t make sense with Colorado adding and taking on more cap.

Definitely agree with you on value. BUT, there is a world in which we are priced out of Toews next year as well. There is also a world in which Landeskog is done playing professional hockey. We also have guys like Malinski and Behrens in the pipeline ready to play at rookie contracts. This is something we'd have to consider.

Based on their ages and the rumor mill, I’d imagine Nylander gets more than Toews on the market. Cap concerns will be major for summer 2024 no matter what we do. I just think that math becomes much harder with Nylander.

Such an easy no for the Avs and I'm surprised at the number of normally sane Avs fans saying it's an interesting idea. Toews is cheaper, has more value to both the Avs AND in a trade, and potentially could be re-signed.

The retention isn’t free and that retention helps them finish off their 4th line.

And he could potentially resign in the summer of 2024 anyway. Both players are very clearly going to test the market and get paid.

The retention still makes it so the Avs are taking a net of $1.9M when they’re giving up more value. Doesn’t make sense.

Still makes little to no sense for the Avs.
